Nova High School students walked out on Tuesday, in protest of two of their teachers being reassigned: The re-assignment is part of a city-wide staffing adjustment of teachers. Seattle Public Schools say that due to lower than expected enrollment at 28 Seattle schools, teachers from 19 of those will be moved to schools with higher than anticipated enrollment. By protesting, Nova students are effectively showing the community how much their teachers mean to them. I asked my friend Jeremy, who graduated from Nova in 2012, if he had any thoughts on the studentsโ protest, and he responded, โNova kids love to protest, but also teachers who are at Nova are what make it special.โ
Fish in hot water: Federal officials declared disasters for salmon fisheries along the West Coast, making the fisheries eligible for a slice of $20 million in disaster assistance. Putting aside the debate on the ethics of different types of fisheries, the reasons cited for the disaster are “unusually warm and poor ocean conditions that affected fish.” Cue an anti-climate-change response of, “unusually warm water is actually normal, and the fish love a bit of spa time in the unusually-normal warm water.”
Washington Senator Maria Cantwell finally commits to debate: Maria Cantwellโs campaign team agreed to the debate coalition invitation after initially saying she couldn’t commit. Her excuse was that the date would potentially conflict with her Senate schedule. Susan Hutchison, Cantwell’s Republican opponent, released this video in a tweet, where she referred to Seattle as a โSafe Space.โ At the end of this video, she literally threatens to debate an empty wooden chair:
D.C. insider Cantwell needs her โsafe spaceโ and is arrogantly refusing to debate me Oct 6 at PLU and Oct 30 at @GonzagaU, as scheduled by the @SeattleCityClub Debate Coalition. #waelex #WAsen #Susan4Senate #CantwellCant @MariaCantwell pic.twitter.com/fdDjKi0Yss

No word on whether or not she was purposefully referencing the time, during the 2012 Republican Convention, that Clint Eastwood lectured a chair in which sat an imaginary and invisible Barack Obama. Something tells me she was not.
Apparently ice doesn’t like warm water either: New research on glaciers, in particular the Vavilov Ice Cap in Russia, shows that glaciers are responding to climate change and moving faster than previously expected. According to The Guardian and research done on the ice movement: “It shows that ice sheet can move quickly and once we pass a threshold, they may be hard to stop.” No amount of research could possibly do justice to the seriousness and immediacy of climate change, but we can only hope it convinces the stalwarts.
Who keeps giving this man a microphone?: President Donald Trump expressed at the United Nations General Assembly something so flagrantly false it’ll make your head spin.
Pres. Trump: “The Republicans could not be nicer, could not be more respectful to the process, certainly could not be more respectful to the woman, and I’m okay with that. I think I might have pushed it forward a lot faster.” https://t.co/c52vznmm6L pic.twitter.com/ss2PQlEnyM

Gosh, my memory is a bit fuzzy but I seem to remember something about an illegal a dubious operation from the GOP to refuse a vote for a nominated Supreme Court Judge, but I just can’t put my finger on it.
Padma Lakshmi’s New York Times piece on her own sexual assault is a must read: Anyone who watched the relevant seasons of Top Chef knows Padma as the exceptionally effervescent hostโit’s hard not to smile when she comes on screen. Well, she apparently writes really well too. This piece is about why she kept quiet after being raped when she was 16, and was written in response to the people expressing dismay that the Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh accusers didn’t report their assaults. Nothing this blurb can say will do justice to this piece, so definitely go read it.
In infinitely more trivial news today: I’m told this is what the people want to know.

Washington State Department of Transportation wants you to know it’s just a test:
Good morning! We’re a day away from participating in a full-scale emergency response drill in Seattle’s new SR 99 tunnel. If you see emergency response vehicles and people with “injuries,” don’t worry. This is only a test. https://t.co/uuNxFJ8x5h pic.twitter.com/EARtev8BiU

We really need Katie Herzog’s take on this: A Swedish ad watchdog has determined that when used as an ad, the popular meme involving a boyfriend checking out the butt of a woman passing by, while his girlfriend, holding his hand, gives him a look of outrage, is sexist. Apparently the meme was being used by online recruitment advertisements on Facebook, and the company in question defended its use by saying, “Anyone familiar with the internet and meme culture knows how this meme is used and interpreted. Gender is usually irrelevant in the context.” Mhmm. “Usually irrelevant.”
Kors buys Versace: Michael Kors, fashion god from the hit show Project Runway, buys what appears to be a small Italian, boutique fashion brand, named Versace and rumor has it he is going to take it to the next level.
What are Seattleites eating today for breakfast?:
Shalena from Ballard says she’s having “Savory steel cut oats: salt, pepper, onion salt and Parmesan, topped with a poached egg and all prepped for the morning!” That’s one of those meals you could could eat for breakfast, lunch or dinner! She also says, “Good Morning,” to which I respond, if you say so! Just kidding, good morning to you!

Slog extraordinaire Lissa, sent us a picture of what she describes as “English muffin with peanut butter, and sliced banana and strawberries, along with a good book and the required big ass cup of coffee.” I’m right there with you on the big ass cup of coffee, in fact that is all I have had this morning. It does seem like a plug for N.K. Jemisin but we will allow that because we love N.K. Jemisin!

From our pal Jim, “today is red quinoa, red bell peppers and onion, ham, egg fried with vindaloo curry powder, swiss cheese, avocado.” Beautiful as always Jim. The world is envious.

Meghan from South Seattle is out of town but managed to put together a delightfully continental breakfast.
