- Satya Nadella sent an e-mail to Microsoft employees last night saying he supports equal pay for men and women.
Satya Nadella Says Women Should Ask for Raises if They โDeserveโ It: Following his statement yesterday at a conference celebrating women in computing that women shouldnโt ask for raises and instead should just have faith that the system will reward them, and that doing so would equate to โgood karma,โ Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella sent an e-mail to his employees yesterday evening trying to clarify retract his comment:
Toward the end of the interview, Maria asked me what advice I would offer women who are not comfortable asking for pay raises. I answered that question completely wrong. Without a doubt I wholeheartedly support programs at Microsoft and in the industry that bring more women into technology and close the pay gap. I believe men and women should get equal pay for equal work. And when it comes to career advice on getting a raise when you think itโs deserved, Mariaโs advice was the right advice. If you think you deserve a raise, you should just ask.
As Paul Constant noted yesterday, women continue to be paid much less than men, and Microsoftโs workforce is overwhelmingly male. โHow will telling women to stop asking for raises allow them to climb the ladder to pay equity?โ he asked. Here were some more reactions on Twitter to Nadellaโs โkarmaโ comment:
Hi @satyanadella. Even though I liked your speech, I will still ask for a raise because men do, too – without thinking about karma. #ghc14

Itโs also men running the most profitable companies in the world speaking at #ghc14 that are clueless about systemic inequality.

Did the speaker just recommend that women rely on karma to get raises? #ghc14 After telling us that we have little tolerance for BS??

Auditor Criticizes State Parks Department on Accounting Practices: Among the disturbing findings, reports the Seattle Times, the department does not have written procedures to ensure the proper tracking of Discover Passes that are printed or distributed, does not maintain a daily log of the number of Discover Passes sold, does not reconcile the number of passes sold to deposit slips, has no controls to ensure funds collected through boxes were deposited, had only one person collecting cash from boxes at park locations, and did not consistently make deposits in a timely manner. Also unsettling, the department spent more than $1 million on fuel, including $660,000 on fuel cards, between July 2012 and July 2013, although there are no policies or procedures on the use of the fuel cards.
