Any good news in our times must be appreciated and slowly savored. And this is indeed very good news. Black voters in the important swing state of North Carolina just won an important victory against the GOP, whose legislators imposed a voter ID law in 2013 that made it difficult for blacks to vote. After key aspects of the law were removed by federal appeals court in 2016, the GOP went to the Supreme Court with the hope of having the key features of the law (which favored white voters) reinstated. But today, SCOTUS declined to hear the case, and so lower ruling stands. Blacks have won here, and for now.

In other SCOTUS news: The GOP is trying to show that it has some remorse for outright stealing a Supreme Court seat from Obama by considering his pick, Judge Merrick Garland, for the top and currently open position at the FBI. The whole thing is a dumb publicity stunt. Why? Court analyst Dahlia Lithwick sums it up best in the Washington Post:
“Garland probably won’t want to give up his lifetime tenure as the chief judge of the second-most important court in the land… and surely the most significant bulwark against Trump administration overreach, in exchange for a 12-minute gig on The Apprentice before he uses the wrong color highlighter and gets fired by a crazy person.”
