Go ahead. Do a quick little Google search of post offices in Seattle. See that part southeast of Madison Street? There's one little red post-office dot for the entire Central District. That post office is closing on Saturday.

The Central District's only post office, located at 23rd and Union, had its lease terminated to make way for a new development by Lake Union Partners. The Midtown: Public Square project, as it's being billed, is going to be huge. It will also include 125 affordable housing units. The post office is temporarily vacating the spot, according to the Capitol Hill Seattle Blog.

A post office worker told CHS Blog: "We will return once the re-development has concluded. In the meantime, we are suggesting that our customers go to the Broadway Post Office for their mailing needs.”

The Broadway location in Capitol Hill is 1.4 miles away from the original Central District post office. That's a bitch of a commute to mail something.

The Central District is changing drastically, and quickly. In just 2017, the beloved Promenade Red Apple Market closed its doors after 33 years. It, too, gave way to a new development. Residents are losing community staples and necessary services.

With this vacancy, there's now no post office east of Broadway until you reach the one on Rainier Avenue near Martin Luther King Jr Way.

"I send and return packages pretty frequently and I would like to have a functioning post office within walking distance," Kim Selling, the music calendar editor for The Stranger and a Central District resident wrote over Slack. "I hate that Central District spaces aren’t respected by the city."

The Stranger reached out to the post office and Lake Union Partners to confirm that the post office would have a retail spot within the new development. Both have yet to respond.

In the meantime, there's a privately-owned business called The Postman that can satisfy any of your Central District mailing needs. It's across the street from GroceOut, and is run by a local couple. The lines aren't too bad either, according to Selling.
