NHL commissioner Gary Bettman announced today that the league will consider an expansion application from Seattle, bringing the city one step closer to landing a professional hockey team, according to reports.

Bettman's announcement comes days after the City Council approved an agreement with Los Angeles-based Oak View Group to redevelop KeyArena into a state-of-the-art sports and entertainment complex. The expansion would cost $650 million.

Making hockey happen in Seattle will largely depend on fans. Along with applying for the expansion, the city will be eligible to start a season ticket drive.
