...it's that Republicans are scum. From The Week:

"The result of hearings, at least in the short run, is the Republican base was awakened," says Lee Miringoff, Marist's polling director.

And what awakened the Republican base? Not months of polls showing an incoming blue wave and not Trump's tax cuts or his rallies. Nope. It was the slim chance that a powerful man might not get away with sexually assaulting a woman. That's it. A terrible man who is alleged to have done terrible things and who has been credibly accused by more than one woman of having done terrible things and who on live television did disqualifying things — lying under oath during his confirmation hearing, launching partisan attacks against sitting Democratic senators, "the Clintons," etc. — was in trouble and might be held accountable and that cannot stand.

It wasn't the lying under oath or the partisanship that awakened the GOP base. It was the alleged sexual assault(s). The GOP base wasn't excited about voting this year before Kavanaugh was nominated and they weren't much more excited about voting after Kavanaugh was nominated. The Republican base only started to get excited about voting in the 2018 midterms after Kavanaugh was credibly accused of sexual assault and it looked — for a minute there — like he might not get away with it. The Republican base didn't "awaken" until it looked like Brett Kavanaugh might not join Clarence Thomas on the Supreme Court.

This wouldn’t be the first time an accusation of sexual assault got Republicans excited to vote. They were psyched to vote for an accused sexual predator—for an admitted sexual predator—in 2016. And not just Republican men. Remember those “Trump Can Grab My Pussy!” t-shirts worn by the double X deplorables at Trump rallies in the fall of 2016? Republicans in Alabama were just as excited to vote for Roy Moore, alleged child sexual predator, in 2017. And this from the same party that spent the better part of last decade insisting it had to protect little girls from the non-existent threat posed by trans women using public restrooms.

The renewed enthusiasm of the GOP base isn't an indictment of the Democratic party. It's an indictment of the GOP. Don't let them get away with it. VOTE.
