Kress IGA is going to get the shit sued out of them by an enterprising lawyer should one have the gumption and time.

I mean, heck, I'm sure there are literally hundreds of people willing to testify that their lives and hearing have been impacted. Hundreds. And I'm sure there are enterprising people willing to, um, search for the people if properly motivated. If you take my meaning.

Good reporting. This is why people stop believing in government, when they have to deal with stuff like this that should be a clear fine for break noise laws, it becomes a huge issue where nothing gets done. I lost faith in the seattle government when i told the only option i had for illegal dumping that my neighbors did (I actually saw them do it) was to call the police and try to press charges. Most sane cities have bylaw officers that deal with this stuff.

How can he hear anything from across the street? He usually has hiphop blasting away from his stand at 120db. Anybody who waits for a bus there could tell you that.

5

I need to install one of these in front of my lawn to stop the tweakers from hanging out. Thanks for letting me know about these.

6

Yeah, thanks for letting us know about this expensive thing that doesn't work.

7

I never knew that ratty little pod on the sidewalk was inhabited. Huh. It's a business, huh? How about that. Anyways, that grocery store has my sympathy. How they stay in business in that scuzzy location is a mystery to me.

9

Maybe "someone" should take a baseball bat to that thing some night.

10

"The building owner, a California-based property manger called Retail Opportunity Investments Corp., had installed the device, and they were the only ones who could un-install it."

@9: yes, I agree. Certainly a baseball bat, sledgehammer, or a shotgun with buckshot could uninstall it.

11

Why don't they try what the Rainier Beach Safeway was doing for the same reason: play classical music? It worked! And they can then be known as the "Highbrow IGA" 😁

12

Thanks for letting us know about it. I don't go into that store too often but I'll avoid it from now on.

13

@11: because that would mean treating everyone who has to spend significant amounts of time near the store as though they were human beings, and the main point of post-1981 capitalism id that property owners and the wealthy should never have any obligation to do that.

It was going off again today at 5:00pm as I was waiting for my bus, and Kress is for sure not sticking to the supposedly agreed on restrictions. I was one of the original people who reported the noise back in April because it was painfully loud - and still is. And yes, Gant it right -- it does absolutely nothing to discourage anyone from loitering near the store entrance. So instead it's painful to anyone waiting for a bus, anyone working or shopping in Kress (because while the article doesn't mention it you can hear the noise throughout the store), and particularly Gant. So it hurts and annoys everyone except the people it's supposed to discourage -- so why are they allowed to continue being a public hazard?

"When Gaft complained about the noise to a manager at Kress IGA, he says the manager told him it was out of his hands. The building owner, a California-based property manger called Retail Opportunity Investments Corp., had installed the device, and they were the only ones who could un-install it."

Retail Opportunity Investments may be California-based, but they have a local office at the Crossroads Mall in Bellevue. More info:

https://www.roireit.net/company-information/contact-us/

It says their Bellevue office has both a phone number and a fax number, but I think you can send faxes to their regular phone number. If it doesn't go through, just keep trying.

16

Might want to cover your bases, though, and fax the IGA too.

17

Noise ordinances should be looked into ( we have quite strict ones here in New Jersey). Public health and safety are being compromised and perhaps it would be a good idea to take this concern to another level - is there an investigative journalist on one of the local television news programs? A "Live At Five" segment that brings this issue to the wider public forum? Or speak with an audiologist.about the permanent physical and psychological damage.being done to the exposed population.

18

Aggressively enforce the vagrancy laws and there is no need for this. The newsstand can grow, people can go to work without being assaulted, everyone wins. Except the vagrants.

19

Why is Sawant’s office getting involved? Downtown isn’t part of her district.

20

@j2patter you were told wrong illegal dumping can be reported using the Find It Fix It app. It’s then tracked allowing the city to take code enforcement action if necessary.
