When Gomer Pyle Married Rock Hudson

you left out the funniest part of the story:

"A longstanding rumor maintains that Nabors "married" actor Rock Hudson in the early 1970s, shortly before Nabors began his relationship with Cadwallader...According to Hudson, the story originated with a group of "middle-aged homosexuals who live in Huntington Beach", who sent out joke invitations for their annual get-together...One year, the group invited its members to witness "the marriage of Rock Hudson and Jim Nabors", at which Hudson would take the surname of Nabors' most famous character, Gomer Pyle, becoming "Rock Pyle."

I grew up on a steady diet of Gomer Pyle reruns nearly every day after school, on our old black & white TV. I always thought Jim Nabors was the nicest, most hilarious goofball actor ever. Never failed to put a smile on my face.

I was utterly floored when he came to Seattle to get married. I had absolutely no idea that he was gay. Not a clue. It was so sweet that he was finally able to marry, but also kind of heartbreaking that he had to keep it a secret for decades.

I can see Rock & Jim.

@2: Those were the times. We didn't have the perspective to always see it as heartbreaking. And when we did, we were trying to imagine the impossible.

It has been a long time since I have read a good article in The Stranger that wasn’t just propaganda and spin. Thank you.

@2 Reverse Polarity: +1. Thank you for beating me to it--exactly what I was going to say.
I loved Jim Nabors as Gomer Pyle and knew he had an operatic singing voice. I had no idea that Nabors and Stan Cadawallader came to Seattle to get married in 2013. At long last they finally found happiness. What a touching story, indeed.
Rest in peace, Jim Nabors.
