"they used this extra money to go to the doctor and get dental work they had been putting off"
hmm what's wrong with this picture?
Maybe they shouldn't have to use hourly wages to get necessary medical care- oops I said it!

2

None of the issues outlined warrant “hazard” pay. If they are “living on the razors edge” that was not caused by the pandemic as they have been fully employed the whole time. They are in a union and that is an issue for collective bargaining along with the medical and dental benefits.

At least they have more in common with the rest of us now. Completely abandoned by the council.

Sawant was the only one opposed, JUST LIKE TRUMP, OMG SHE IS SO TRUMPY BECAUSE TRUMP ALWAYS PAYS ALL HIS WORKERS ALL THE TIME AND DOESN'T FORCE HIS CONTRACTORS TO SUE HIM FOR THEIR WAGES EVER!!! HOLY CRAP SAWANT WAS JUST TRUMP IN A SCOOBY DOO RUBBER MASK ALL ALONG!!!

5

@4 Sawant didn't oppose. She wasn't even there to support the affected workers.

6

"That relief did not last long. All council members voted to end hazard pay except Councilmember Kshama Sawant, who could not attend the meeting on Monday. Her office said Sawant was “categorically opposed [to] ending the grocery worker hazard pay.”"

Oh wait, you have no reading comprehension. Let's simplify.

"Her office said Sawant was “categorically opposed [to] ending the grocery worker hazard pay.”"

Even if she was there, it wouldn't matter because EVERYONE ELSE opposed it. It would have been meaningless.

But that doesn't matter because she's MATHEMATICALLY EQUAL TO TRUMP!!!! PHYSICISTS HAVE WRITTEN PAPERS ABOUT HOW YOU CAN SUBSTITUTE SAWANT FOR TRUMP IN TACO RECIPES, THEREFORE ANYONE WHO VOTES FOR SAWANT IS UNAMERICAN!!!!

Oh wait, you probably only read the first and last lines of messages, so let's make the last line count.

"Her office said Sawant was “categorically opposed [to] ending the grocery worker hazard pay.”"

7

You cannot measure Sawant's position or momentum with complete certainty.

@7

"Her office said Sawant was “categorically opposed [to] ending the grocery worker hazard pay.”"

Wow, I can absolutely not tell what possible position Sawant could possibly have on this topic with any amount of certainty AT ALL. That line could mean literally ANYTHING. JUST LIKE TRUMP!!!! SOUND THE BAT-SIGNAL AND GET ALL THE SUPERHEROES UP IN A TIZZY, IT'S FALSE EQUIVALENCY TIME!!!!!!!

yes, but dog parks!

This country is not going to learn a damn thing. Everyone should quit. They keep talking about the "great resignation" well they are going to be in for a surprise when we have no one at working in any "essential" positions - no grocery store workers, no nurses, no doctors, no caregivers, no restaurant workers, no hotel workers, etc. etc. etc. Pretending the pandemic is over and people have to suck it up and go back to being paid shit wages because the overlords demand it is so fucking shortsighted and stupid. And everywhere you go employers are whining and bitching and moaning about how no one wants to work . Yeah no one wants to continue to work for YOUR PROFIT MARGIN while making wages they can't live on motherfucker.

Look at what happened in Kentucky with the tornadoes. Amazon and the other factory (candle maker?) threatened employees that if they left to try to save their lives they would lose their jobs. People are nothing but cannon fodder for money in this country.

Workers literally have ALL OF THE POWER. It would require MASS REFUSAL TO WORK howeverr, for that power to be used successfully. How long do you think this country could function if every single person walked out of their job for a week? A month? More?

The former resident of the White House literally murdered hundreds of thousands of people in this country and has influenced so many others to not get vaccinated and to get sick and to die in the name of some sort of insane fealty to him. Corporations are crying inflation and gutting people's already margin thin survival budgets by raising prices to maintain their profit margins and their CEO pay and their shareholder values - all while we are still in the middle of a pandemic that will literally never end because people are too fucking stupid to get vaccinated and wear a goddamn mask.

The best thing that could happen to this country is if everyone and I mean everyone stops doing their job, stops paying their bills, and refuses to continue to participate in this fucked up insanity anymore. What are they going to do? Kill us? THEY ARE ALREADY DOING THAT IN EVERY POSSIBLE WAY. SLOWLY. EXCRUCIATINGLY.

I am so fucking over the devaluation of human life in the name of greed and obsession with wealth in this country. Burn this shit hole to the ground, every last bit of it, and see what happens (hint: the world will go on and no one will give a shit).

11

@7 - if we put her in a recall ballot box and don't open it, will she be simultaneously dead and alive?

12

@6 Yep, you are right. Sawant's office did send out a press release at some point after the vote. I thought her constituents might want a bit more than that, even if it was only symbolic. I know I would have if I was in their shoes.

13

I’m pretty mad that Sawant wasn’t there.

14

@12 D'oh, once you start actually reading things, there's nothing to make fun of anymore. Such a joykiller.

18

@16, it's not a competition or a zero sum game. everyone should get paid more, even assholes like you.

22

20, I'm guessing this person has no real healthcare duties and is bitter because they are stuck changing bedpans

Well... we have a lot of Federal Covid relief funds...why not use that money to continue to subsidize the grocery workers pay?

We could also use City of Seattle revenue to continue to subsidize the grocery worker's pay.

If we as a city/community feel these worker's need extra benefits to help us, then why wouldn't we want to support them with our tax dollars.

Its ironic we spend million to help the homeless, single mothers, drug addicts, immigrants, sex workers, unemployed and the mentally disturbed ... but not a dime to help our local grocery store workers who feed us.
