For the month of June, Cupcake Royale is offering “The Gay,” a sprinkle-laced vanilla cupcake topped with vanilla frosting, more rainbow sprinkles, and a cute candy rainbow. So gay! They’re $4 a pop, a little pricier than their other treats, but Cupcake Royale is donating 50% of the proceeds to the It Gets Better Project. $2 for a cupcake, $2 for It Gets Better! Win/win! They hope to raise over $5,000 during Gay Pride Month. (And if you’re cheap and/or watching the calories, they’re also offering a bite-sized version called “The Baby Gay.”) Yum!

But … these aren’t cupcakes with bacon in them …
Kinda lame and uninspired cupcakes if you ask me.
It think they should’ve had rainbow chips in the vanilla cupcake and done something colorful/graphic with the frosting and left off the disgusting sugar rainbow and sprinkles.
What flavor?
@2 They do have rainbow chips inside. Look closer.
Well, I’m a derp. I could have just read the article you posted instead of letting my eyes glaze over at the sight of the cupcakes.
Nice idea, but these have “Safeway” written all over them.
@6 Except they taste way better than Safeway cupcakes. But still not as good as my own.
I think I just fell in love with Cupcake Royale. I wish I could order one. Damn Maine being all easy to forget and stuff.
Go on with your bad selves Cupcake makers!
I am straight and I support all LGBT people in this world. They are all important to me!
What is with you people and over-frosted cupcakes? Jesus Christ!
Vanilla cupcake with vanilla frosting.
My, that’s mighty white of them.
@9 They don’t look that frosted to me.
These are exactly what clueless hetros would think a gay cupcake would be like.
A gay cupcake would be retro-chic.
Teh gays took our rainbows and now they want our cupcakes too!
Those aren’t as cute as some of your cupcakes, Megan. I’d still buy one though if I lived anywhere near Seattle.
@10 – yeah, they should at least make a leather one. (They could even add bacon and call it the Leather Pig)
I think they’re cute, and I like vanilla. I might need to stop by today and pick one up.
I think Cupcake Royale is owned by a lesbian, so presumably this is HER clueless-hetero design.
Too bad Trophy Cupcakes isn’t doing this. The cake in their cupcakes is far superior to Cupcake Royale. CR cake is too dry!
The flour is an important part, and the ingredients as well.
The best vanilla is French Vanilla (aka real vanilla). No corn syrup shiite for me ..
Not trying to be a jerk here (or anti-cupcake), but what does the It Gets Better Project need $ for? It is free to host things on Youtube and people do it on a volunteer basis, so there don’t seem to be any costs associated with it. If anything, the main video(s) has been viewed so many times that it probably generates revenue and I’m guessing Dan actually got paid from Google for the ad campaign. What am I missing here?
Holy shit, I had no idea cupcakes were so controversial.
@12 and 16: Cupcake Royale is in fact owned by a lesbian. Her name is Jody Hall.
I will only buy an overpriced cupcake if it is personally farted out by a unicorn frolicking among rainbows with puppies and bacon strips.
@22 what if it’s not a vegan unicorn but one that eats cute pitbull puppies?
… which would explain why it was frolicking …
And the boycott starts now. “How am I supposed to explain to my children what ‘The Gay’ cupcake is?”
I have not been paid for the Google commercial.
We need to pay to host our website, we’ve needed to pay some lawyers, but most of the money we’ve raised has been donated on to Trevor, GLSEN, and the ACLU.
cupcake royale is fucking delicious and dan savage is a fucking boss. this is a win-win.
Well, owned by a lesbian….that explains it. Surprised it isn’t decked out in plaid flannel and denim.
ha ha…you guys are hilarious…and to the one asking how to explain “gay” to their kid….why not simply tell them it’s someone who loves someone the same sex as them? It’s not that complicated…i don’t think there’s ever been a time when my kids didn’t know what a gay person was! Infact, i remember cringing when my daughter was four and started grilling a single friend i had on why he wasn’t married and didn’t have kids like mommy even though he was my age, and finally ending by asking, “so, are you gay?” :). Regarding the cupcakes..great idea but they do seem a little obvious and uninspired…i would have expected something more fabulous for a “gay cake”!
Jesus H on a popsicle stick! It’s a nice fucking gesture. What the fuck is the matter with you people? Seriously: when was the last time you decided to help a cause you support in a public way? You know, in a way complete strangers sitting in their armchairs judge and criticize in a completely out-of-proportion way. THEY’RE CUPCAKES, PEOPLE. GET A GRIP.
Way to be ungrateful….they’re cupcakes! For a good cause! Gah.
Makes sense. Thanks for the info.
Vanilla, with vanilla, with sprinkles. Yup, pretty mainstream gay. Sounds like Seattle.
Hey Everyone! This is Jody – owner of Cupcake Royale. Thanks for the comments. We’re doing this because we think that Dan Savage hit it out of the park with this project, and even though we all live in progressive Seattle, there are kids struggling with coming out, and this is making a difference. I’m a mother with a 2 year old son, and am a lesbian in a committed relationship. And i have a business that employs 80 people in Seattle – and I pay health care for my folks, among other benefits. I’m about using your super powers for good. We’re donating almost the entire profit of this cupcake to IGBP – it’s cool – right? Today we probably added over $200 just in Capitol Hill alone (and we have 5 cafes!). We’re going to hit $5000 very fast. Thanks for your support of this. If you want the full press release – send me an email: jody@cupcakeroyale.com.
Thanks Jody, you are one of my favorite Seattle biz owners and are very loved and supported, I’m on a strict diet but i’ll come get a pair for my favorite coworkers tomorrow!
This is fantastic and the cupcakes look great. Don’t be haters, internet people. Jody, I love that you’re doing this, and I love that you named the cupcake “the gay.” I made rainbow cupcakes for pride one year, and yours look _much_ more professional!
@9: There’s no such thing as an “over-frosted” cupcake. You just suck at pastries.
@24: If you are not comfortable discussing things of a sexual nature, or any nature at all that fundies seem to get their panties in a wad over, just do the world a favor and don’t have kids. Thanks.
@28 & 37:
I believe #24 was being facetious.
Good grief, people. Do you truly have nothing better to do than debate about cupcakes?
Only in Seattle can people manage to make a nice gesture using cupcakes into some sort of manufactured outrage.
Jody, I think it’s sweet. I’ll be buying a few.
