Amidst a series of conflicting reports, Abdul Hakim Belhaj, the military head of Libya’s transitional government now tells Al Jazeera that former Libyan strongman Muammar Gaddafi is dead. Gaddafi is reported to have died of wounds suffered in the fall of his hometown of Sirte.
“A new Libya is born today,” Mahmoud Shammam, the chief spokesman of the Transitional National Council said. “We were serious about giving him a fair trial. It seems God has some other wish.”

Interesting how Hillary was just saying a couple of days ago that the Libyans needed to kill Gaddafi. I’m sure it’s just a coincidence though. And ain’t it grand how tyrants and criminals are no longer brought to trial? Freedom really is on the march!!!

Kind of a bummer if he’s really dead… only because his trial would have been incredibly entertaining.
Congrats to the people of Libya for throwing off the shackles of Big (socialist and corrupt) Government. Amazingly we have a bunch of drifters downtown demanding a massive nanny state.
Al Jazeera has a still image of his body on right now. Somewhat bad taste, but I understand the wish to show this isn’t just another rumor.
Here’s hoping Libya can make it to some sort of a democracy soon, and the NTC doesn’t just become the newest military junta.

LOL, I read that headline as occurring in a city called “Sirte Falls” and was very confused.
Sirte Falls does sound like a nice bedroom community however.
Because this is the perfect time to nitpick, does anyone else read “Gaddafi is reported to have died of wounds suffered in the fall of his hometown of Sirte,” as saying that the city actually fell, say about fifty feet, and Gaddafi did not land on his feet?
Sirte Falls is dead. Especially on the weekends.
The question remains: will the new Libya be any better than it was under Gaddafi? Will it form into a middle-east democracy? Or a theocracy like Iran? Or collapse into chaos and anarchy?
Gaddafi was an asshole, no question. But don’t assume Libya will now be all unicorns and rainbows now that he’s gone.
