Lesley Hazleton is the author of a lovely book about Jezebel, the
baddest babe in the Bible. Hazleton argues that Jezebel got her
terrible reputation because she did not think, look, or act like the
people who wrote the Bible. Jezebel was foreign and
cosmopolitan; her critics were insulated and backward. The true
story of Jezebel is not that different from the story of the last
presidential election: a struggle between the city and the country,
crowded blue states and sparse red states. (Seattle First
