George McGovern’s second pick for vice president (and the point man in LBJ’s war on poverty) died a few minutes ago. He was 95.

  1. As a Returned Peace Corps Volunteeer (Republic of Cameroon, 89-92′), I salute Sargent Shriver. Good on him. He served America & the world well.

  2. Shriver did so many great things, including being a key figure in the creation of the Peace Corps (and its first director), and all we can get out of Constant is a snarky “George McGovern’s second pick for vice president…”

Asshole. Have a little class and respect for a great man.

  3. Condolences to our former California first lady, Maria Shriver, and her four brothers.

I had always hoped that the Kennedy legacy would pull Arnold Schwarzenegger into the Democratic fold. Maybe the passing of yet another member of the Kennedy old guard will galvanize some of their descendants to take more public leadership roles, but most of them do perhaps more societally significant work in the trenches anyway.

In addition to the Peace Corps, the whole Shriver family has done mountains of work for the developmentally disabled. They deserve our thanks.

  4. Rest in peace Sarge. He was one of the best men of the last century. Founded the Peace Corps, Job Corps, Head Start, VISTA, Legal Aid to name a few. Few people can even hope to make such a positive impact on the lives of so many.

He deserves more consideration than shown in the summary. Shame on SLOG.

  5. In one of those odd twists of history he died on the 50th anniversary of JFK’s inauguration. He was one of the best personifications of JFK’s most famous question and the embodiment of the (naive?) idealism of that era.
