How come there hasn’t been any mention of Dan’s big Broadway news yet on Slog?

I respond: Because Dan‘s the only one around here allowed to exploit his family for a living, as this show-celebrating headline makes clear.

Congrats, Dan! For the folks making The Kid: The Musical a reality, an immortal quote from RuPaul: Don’t fuck it up. (The Kid‘s already won the 2009 BMI Foundation award for Best New Musical, so my urging may be unnecessary, but it never hurts to repeat good advice.)

Also, the only thing that could make this whole endeavor any gayer is if it were stage-managed by Wayland Flowers & Madame.

    I thought the book was a rehash of all the adoptions stories in the whole world and quite boring – but – then, just about every couple in my family going back several generations has adopted kids ….

    Will be looking for the cheap seats in Seattle …

  9. I really liked the book. In fact, years after reading the book, I still have the image of DJ’s bio-mom sobbing on her bed etched in my mind.

    But a musical? Really? Les Mis – powerful; My Fair Lady – adorable; The Kid – ???? Really?

  11. Actually I’m fairly sure Dan a) is not making a dime off of this production and b) is sort of creeped out by it (or at least that’s what he told me).

    This is what happens when you fail to retain full creative control. Let it be a lesson….

    I and a friend saw their shortened single day edition of Mourning Becomes Electra, starring the chick from Saved, one of the guys from Milk, and Lili Taylor. And, it was AWFUL. So awful that it closed either before it officially opened (we saw it in previews), or just afte it opened.

    Savage, pick a better group.

  14. It’s unlikely Dan has much to say in this matter. Although he authored the book, I’m guessing (and he can correct me if I’m wrong here) that his publisher probably owns the subsidiary rights, in which case they can option them to whomever they please. Dan may get some sort of acknowledgment as creator of the original work, but unless the script uses material from it verbatim, he may not be receiving more than a token royalty as compensation.

  15. I’m with Allyn. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book, but I’m having a hard time imagining it as a musical. But then I’m sort of indifferent to musicals anyway.

  16. I enjoyed the book. I am fond of musicals, too. But, like Allyn and Reverse Polarity, I’m also having a hard time imagining it as a musical. We shall see.
