THURSDAY 10/18

POLICE BRUTALITY PANEL--In anticipation of the Sixth Annual National Day of Protest to Stop Police Brutality on October 22 (see Stranger Suggests), the People's Union for Economic Justice will host a panel discussion on police brutality, with a special focus on the African American community in Seattle's Central District. Seattle Central Community College, Room BE 1110, 1701 Broadway Ave E, 6:30 pm. Call 442-2077 for more information.

SATURDAY 10/20

THE SWEET SCIENCE--As a benefit for Senior Services Minor Home Repair Program, a nonprofit agency, Cappy's on Union will host the "Saturday Night Sizzler: A Boxing Extravaganza." There will be boxing fitness demos, door prizes, and, as the press release promises, "great fun." According to research conducted by The Stranger's own Marc Pearson, boxing as sport began in Ethiopia, became a part of the Olympic games in 688 B.C.E., evolved into a very bloody sport in the Roman Empire, and became a modern gentlemen's sport by the Queensberry Rules of 1867. Cappy's on Union Boxing Gym, 2002 E Union St, 322-6410, 7 pm, $5 suggested donation.

READING CHALLENGE MARATHON--Students from Asa Mercer Middle School and Aki Kurose Middle School will face off in a read-a-thon that will take place over the course of seven hours. The school with the most pages read will win. I have no idea how they're planning to judge this--will they test the kids to see if they actually read the pages? Furthermore, the Seattle Public Library encourages you to "cheer on the contestants"--but won't that distraction slow the young readers down? We'll see. Rainier Beach Library, NewHolly Library, Beacon Hill Library, and Columbia Library, 10 am to 5 pm, free. Call the Seattle Public Library at 386-4636 for more information.

SUNDAY 10/21

DOG FASHION--As a benefit for the Progressive Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) and Citizens for Off-Leash Areas (COLA), Vain, the hip hair salon/community center for the splashy, will present "Dog Walk on the Catwalk." The centerpiece will be a costumed dog fashion show featuring the designs of local artists, but there will also be a raffle of canine-related items and a dog-trick exhibition. Costumes will also be available for purchase, to benefit PAWS and COLA. Vain, 2018 First Ave, 441-3441, 6 pm, $6.

STRANGE FASHION--To visually show solidarity with the victims of breast cancer, participants in the Walk for Hope Against Breast Cancer are encouraged to decorate bras and wear them. But since this is likely to be a chilly weekend, City of Hope--the cancer center sponsoring this event and benefiting from it--suggests that you may want to wear your bra over a T-shirt. According to my girlfriend, this may still require women of certain girth to wear a bra underneath the T-shirt--in effect, wearing a T-shirt sandwich. Curious. In any case, it's a very good cause. Marymoor Park, Redmond, WA, registration at 9 am, $30. For more information call 1-800-934-9196, or go to walk.coh.org.
