What's this you say?

Gay men are moving to and building businesses in a still relatively inexpensive neighborhood? Where perhaps numbers of lesbians started moving in and doing home improvements 20 years prior? And where there's maybe a local underprivileged population or two that won't be able to afford to live there anymore if real estate prices rise much higher?

It's a strange new world here in 1987, I'm not sure I'm ready for it.

A gay friend of mine came down to White Center from Capitol Hill to visit me about a year ago. I thanked him for venturing out to the far perimeter of greater Seattle. His response 'I've been looking for an excuse to check out the new Gaymanistan.'

3

Great. Gentrify White Center now, which was one of the few places near Seattle where you could still find a working class vibe, and see a few communities made up of non-white faces.

@3:

Sorry to break the terrifying news to you, but Teh Gayz have been moving into White Center for quite a a few years now; they were just keeping a low profile until recently, which is the only thing that's changed about this situation.

5

How can anyone be gay if gender is a social construct? This all sounds very retro.

2 bars is a gay destination? funny, i always feel like i have to travel out of seattle to get a gay destination. nyc, sf, berlin, koln, paris, madrid, barcelona, still have men only bars without the screaming bridal parties and fag hags.

8

White Center has been a gay destination for decades, probably more so when it had three porn stores with arcades and three huge thrift stores.

9

I commented on White Center being a new gayborhood to a friend of mine and cited the new bars as evidence, to which they snorted, two bars?! But, yes, two bars. That's a lot. It's a sign that there is unmet demand. If you spend all your time on Capitol Hill you might think gay bars are plentiful but that's only because that's where they all are.

Anyway, don't forget OutWest out by Fauntleroy. They've been carrying the rainbow torch for some time.

@5:

Because, dumbass, as pretty much everyone besides dumbasses such as yourself already knows - gender =/= sexual orientation. If you weren't such a dumbass, you would know that too, but the fact you don't (or are simply playing the "willful obtuseness" card) just makes you look like even more of a dumbass than you normally do, you fucking dumbass.

I see Chase has called Jasmyne Keimig for "image most likely to drive down business-hour page views" and raised her.

Men are so gross.

@1:

Well the small staff has a woman & an AFAB trans person, so maybe your whole lesbians vs. gay men thing could be retired.

14

terrible art made by marginalized groups doesn't make it any less terrible

@13

There's no "vs." in my description. The repeatedly observed pattern, going on 50 years now, is first lesbians move into run-down, affordable neighborhoods (even lesbians earn 76 cents on a man's dollar) and then some time later gay men with more capital are drawn in, after the pioneers have sufficiently altered the landscape.

Read your history, angry personnnn.
