FRYE ART MUSEUM
Tiny, doomed men in sweatsuits in snowscapes under terrible skies: such are the drawings of Robyn O’Neil, a young Houston artist, in an exhibition organized by the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston. Modern Nature is Amy Helfand’s collages and carpets that depict gardens in all sorts of visual languages. Both shows through July 30. Swallow Harder is a meaty, confrontational bunch of 47 contemporary works preoccupied with sex, death, and rock ’n’ roll loaned by Seattle collectors Ben and Eileen Krohn. See it. HENRY ART GALLERY
The twin pleasures of Maya Lin: Systematic Landscape are an enormous, permeable wire sculpture of an underwater mountain, and landforms sculpted into the drywalls of the gallery. There’s also a massive bump built of thousands of 2-by-4s, a mountain range cut into parts to walk between, sea forms, and a room dedicated to plans for the Confluence Project, a series of proposed land alterations along the Lewis and Clark Trail. Since Seattle Art Museum downtown is closed for renovations until spring 2007, the Volunteer Park venue is filling in. A new Northwest omnibus series of shows organized by SAM curators includes studio glass, American art deco objects, contemporary art, Morris Graves and Mark Tobey, the sound sculptor Trimpin, and large-scale photographs by Johsel Namkung. SHHH, a major new installation by German-born composer/sculptor Trimpin, features a rotating, hand-formed sphere that orbits rhythmically on a floating, 18-foot-diameter metal ring, producing a layering of sound caused from the changing velocity of rotations when a viewer is in close proximity to the piece.
