Local activist network #ShoutYourAbortion and design firm Civilization have won a Webby Award! The Webbys, if you donโt already know (and itโs ok if you donโt), are often referred to as the โOscars of the Internet.” The award has been recognizing the best of the internet in gaming, design, advertising, user experience, music videos, streaming, and more since 1996, and is internationally renowned.
SYA and Civilization snagged the 2017 Peopleโs Voice Award for Activism, voted on by 3.5 million people via (what else?) the internet, which โrecognizes digital activism around a noteworthy cause.โ Civilization, known for their elegant and slick website designs, helped #ShoutYourAbortion craft their site, which features personal narratives, a space to add stories, and tools for joining the movement for reproductive freedom.
Though Planned Parenthood and the Womenโs March also took home Webby honors, itโs more than refreshing to see such a โradicalโ idea (women, talking openly about their abortions, imagine that) taking hold in the public consciousness a little more and get recognized by a mainstream award.
And it couldnโt be a more perfect time for that kind of attention, with Trump signing anti-abortion bills left and right and appointing a โpro-lifeโ justice to the Supreme Court.
Hereโs Lindy West, co-founder of #ShoutYourAbortion along with Amelia Bonow, talking about her 2010 abortion:
