Oprah loves Ezell’s chicken too.
Those discs on top of the butch cupcakes look like they would squish the frosting right off the back of the cake when you tried to take a bite.
Whoa, how can you not throw in a little Applets and Coplets love. Not only are they a historic candy treat, but they are actually made from the delicious produce that we ACTUALLY PRODUCE.
better to have no basketball team than The Knicks.
Has NYC given up yet? No? Do continue, The Stranger.
Ehem, Almond Roca = Tacoma.
@3 Because no one calls Applets & Cotlets a favorite. Because they’re worthless piles of powdered sugar-covered glop.
@6 For the purpose of this exercise, we will gladly befriend Tacoma and call it ours.
@6: For some reason, at first read I thought you had simply made a failed attempt at a palindrome.
So where is Savage in this all day NYC diss-fest? Too loyal to Broadway to join in? Isn’t there a Seattle is a better place to be gay argument to be made?
nyc suck
But but but NYC has the Magnolia Bakery! They have marginally okay cupcakes, which is to say they are the best and no one else could possibly have better cupcakes.
@7:
My mom actually loves Applets & Cotlets; I buy her a couple of boxes every time I go to Eastern WA….
@9:
Considering all the GOOD stuff currently on Broadway (“Memphis”, “Next To Normal”, & “Million Dollar Quartet” – not to mention Cheyenne Jackson) started out in Seattle, any latent loyalty Dan might feel towards “The Great White Way” can be thoroughly forgiven.
Aplets and Cotlets are terrific. They’re basically Turkish Delight. Yummy.
And cupcakes exemplify everything that is bad and wrong about Seattle.
Also you can regularly get lavender cupcakes here. Actually, lavender in general.
Yupcakes.
I’m pro Applets and Cotlets, and lukewarm on cupcakes… wait, didn’t the cupcake boutique trend come from New York?
@8 – Both the brand and city should consider making a spelling adjustment so this can be.
Ummmm let’s not forget Frangos! A Frederick & Nelson original!
OK, let’s not be ridiculous. We have some truly wonderful food here, but in every category of cuisine NYC kicks Seattle’s ass.
@18 except for pie.
Mmm. Pie.
@18:
Well, for one thing, NYC’s beer & coffee sucks…
@21, a cup of joe in a blue-and-white cup vastly outstrips the most intricately made espresso anything, and if you wanted an espresso, New York’s been making them for a quarter-century longer than Seattle has (hint – espresso is an Italian word, and Italians have always been extremely thin on the ground here). What Seattle excels at is the “latte”, or giant sippy cup of warm milk. Baby food.
As for beer, Seattle’s all about the crappy IPA, which hasn’t really advanced on its craft-beer beginnings of thirty years ago. Real beer = REAL ALE, and New York is far advanced in this category, though both lag behind New England, and of course Old England, where there are still approximately ten thousand pubs that are better than the best American one. Though McSorley’s Ale House and Chumley’s aren’t bad — and wipe the floor with any Seattle pub.
@17,
Ugh. Those things suck.
@18,
I’ll agree with you on sheer diversity, but I’ve had more shitty meals in New York than I care to count. Not for nothing are so many episodes of Kitchen Nightmares set in New York city and state. With that many people, the worst restaurant can stay alive through foot traffic alone.
Doughnuts > cupcakes, and Seattle has two great examples in Top Pot and Frost. Take that, Nyeew Yawk!
@22:
Did I say anything about espresso? No, I said the COFFEE in NYC fucking SUCKS! And it does. Overboiled Chock-full-a-Nutsacks or whatever passes for coffee there, boiled for about 15 hours in an urn large enough to supply an aircraft carrier until it comes out looking like something you’d drain from the oil pan of your car after 5,000 miles, and tasting like what one imagines the liquid squeezed from diarrhetic baboon shite would taste like if one were desperate enough to imbibe such a vile abomination.
That’s why there’s now a $tarbuck$ on every other corner in Manhattan – because New Yorkers would rather drink even that swill than their own home-made crap.
As for beer, with the exception of maybe Brooklyn Brewery, there isn’t a single NYC based micro that can hold a candle to most Seattle-based brews (and if all you’re trying around here are IPA’s, well, there’s your problem righ there). Sure, you can go upstate and find some exceptional craft beers from places like Saranac or Blue Point or Adirondack, but hell, even New Jersey has microbreweries that beat the ass of most of what you can get from NYC brewpubs.
