    @ 1 – that’s true, but it was pretty tame as far as blizzards go. Thing is, that’s normal for Denver. Snow after Groundhog Day is anything but for Seattle.

    Something is weird with our weather…our winters are lasting well into spring and our summers are ending in August (used to be late Sept.).

    We used to hit 70 at least once by April when I was in school.

  26. You can rail against man-made global warming as a theory all you want, but you can’t do it by saying “oh, but the climate changes all the time!”

    That’s not the point, the point is that we have the ability now to observe and make determinations on certain climate anomalies and at least in the interim see that there are certain deficiencies in how we handle climate. For instance, even if climate changes at a rate of +/- 0.2*C per decade, that’s still 2 degrees a century. This is significant toward things like levee systems built to mid-19th century standards, a time when we didn’t know the climate changed naturally (and perhaps with a bit of help from man).

    Bandying about this notion of climate change as a farce is a diversion from the inconvenient truth that, regardless of cause, climate is forcing us to make drastic changes to the way we protect infrastructure and build society.

    You are right, climate is/does change and humans need to take that into account.
    No one really disputes that.

    What many dispute is the notion that:
    1 Man’s evil activities are causing global warming
    2 Changing man’s evil behavior will halt global warming.

    There are a lot of reasons to cut consumption of fossil fuels (mostly financial and geopolitical) and to recycle, and we should do both. But don’t expect that is going to halt change in global climate and don’t expect us to surrender to the Al Gore’s of the world who want to dictate to the rest of us how to live.

  33. @32: No, they do dispute that. The idea is that there is nothing humans should be compelled to do, including changing consumption and growth patterns. In fact, you basically prove this with your last line about those “who want to dictate to the rest of us how to live”. A lot of what is being said is largely applicable to so many societies throughout the world, such as improving levees to take into account the possibility of not 100 year floods but 1,000 year floods, or reducing impermeable surface coverage by densifying regions. And yet, through all this, a growing number of people, many of whom live in depressed regions of the country and world, are being convinced that doing nothing is sufficient?

    It’s a total diversion to expend so much energy basically blasting Gore as a symbol of anti-Laissez-Faire neo-liberalism and to leave such glaring holes in logic like the lack of reasonable efforts to acknowledge and adapt to this diversionary idea of “climate change happens, it’s not man made” that you so eagerly bandy about.

    I don’t care if you don’t like being told what to do or how to live, but then again, I’m not entirely certain the world would be at a loss if you got washed away when Spanaway Lake busts its banks and throws floodwaters over all that lovely concrete freedom.

  34. I sneaked a peak on the UW web cam – one of the few sites I can look at showing Seattle here inside Treasury in DC at my new job as Undersecretary of Expectation Adjustment.

    Looked like it was snowing, but didn’t say anyone making snowmen. And the whole UW Daily was backwards, so I’m not sure what’s up with that.

  35. in the 60’s, when I was a child, we would spend each warm Mayday picking the abundant, blooming flowers and making paper cones with handles. We would fill a cone with flowers and hang them from our favorite neighbor’s doorknobs, and knock and go hide. Even if it were warm enough anymore, kids wouldn’t do such a fun, innocent thing. Or they’d get shot for picking someone else’s flowers.

  37. I’d be more apt the believe in global warming if someone could explain a couple things to me (Im not being a dick, I’ve just never had these things answered for me)

    1. Global Warming, Climate Change- Is it actually getting warmer anywhere? It seems like the whole world is plagued by blizzards and the crop failures caused by freak cold snaps. Our temps are constantly below normal here as well. What locations are seeing a rise in temperature? (I want to go to there.)

    2. How are the ice caps melting in the winter when its 35 degrees here below 50 degrees latitude? How are the caps still melting when its 20 below zero up there?

  38. @17 The ‘Global Climate Crisis’ WILL affect the weather. What you are suggesting it is possible to gauge climate change by sticking a thermometer in you backyard pond and announce each day the direction our climate is moving. Weather is current……climate is the average atmospheric conditions over longer periods of time.

    But I don’t expect you to understand. You are simple.
