According to The Wall Street Journal, unionized Starbucks workers in Chile went on strike on July 7, saying their wages of $2.50 are so low they can’t afford to pay for lunch. Even worse, those wages haven’t gone up in 8 years. Meanwhile, Forbes reported on Friday that thanks to rising stock prices, Starbucks founder and CEO Howard Schultz became a billionaire again for the first time since 2007.
That seems totally fair.

What kind of GOOD JOB bonus does Howard Schultz get if he squashes this strike before it ends up costing the company much? Does he get an even bigger bonus if he does it quickly?

ugh, my sister works for Starbucks (not in Washington) and she will not hear a single word of bad about Starbucks. Not even a question with any sort of implication that Starbucks isn’t all that. I recently sent her a link to the article about Starbucks cancelling their sick pay and she me wrote back a sternly worded email about how awesome an employer Starbucks is and how HOURLY workers should not get paid for any time they don’t work, blah blah blah…yikes.
I think they slip soylent green into the lattes there or something because my sister used to be a very liberal person with a sense of humor.
The Mogulite article isn’t even trying. If you’re going to accuse someone of making money by underpaying his employees, pointing out that his stock portfolio did well last year is about the worst way to do it.
corporations do whatever they can get away w/. it’s in their fucking charter. shareholder value drives all decisions. there is no morality to it. if a policy drives profits up, it is enacted. that’s why nations pass laws restricting their activities, and when you let them run the government & make the laws, you end up w/ the piece of shit world we currently live in.
