This warrants mentioning just because it is so awful. Seattle Mariners third baseman Adrian Beltre, who has been dominant since returning to the team on August 4 after shoulder surgery, could miss the rest of the season after injuring his testicle when he took a wild ground ball to the…balls last night.
Beltre doesn’t wear a protective cup when he plays, which is sort of like the baseball equivalent of not wearing a bike helmet when you ride. Still, give the guy some credit. He stayed in the game for four more innings after he sustained the injury, and the M’s beat the Chicago White Sox (and their jaywalking general manager) in the 14th inning, 1-0.
Thanks to Slog tipper J-Bone.

right.
the only time the M’s get a mention on slog is when some guy busts a nut…
Oh, man, I saw him grab his crotch after taking that grounder. It looked painful. And not only did Beltre stay in the game, he scored the winning run!
helmet
nooo! he was doing so well!
shudder of sympathy
That sounds painful. I’m not going to laugh (out loud).
No. It’s like not using a saddle when you ride a bike.
While waiting for a decision on surgery he has to *ice* it. Yowwwww!
Could you imagine if he was a soccer player, that hit would’ve required 2 stretchers, one for Beltre and one for his mullet.
I have a friend that sustained the very same injury in softball 2 years ago. The injury ultimately ended his softball career… and he was a star track sprinter in college… but afterwards he just never had the wheels again. He was/is subsequently always tender when trying to suddenly accelerate.
Sad to see… hope Beltre’s isn’t as severe.
Oh wow, I hope this guy fully recovers!
Damn! You learn to wear a cup in Little League. Betcha Wak held a cup check before everyone ran out on the field last night.
I remember a few years ago hearing that a high percentage of NFL players don’t wear a cup, which sounded insane.
I finally put it all together when I learned that steroid use leads to testicular atrophy and shrinkage. Not much use for a protective cup if there is nothing to protect. Draw your own conclusions on Beltre.
Playing 3rd base in the majors without a cup is just begging for this type of injury, however.
In baseball they often call this one “a line drive up the middle.”
