If you’re like me (that is, a sucker for pomp and ceremony), check out the US Senate’s Inauguration web site, where you can see the china the new President ate from, the flower arrangements that were on the tables, and the recipes for the three-course meal that was served (plus a lot of historical information, if you’re into that sort of thing). Update: Forbes.com reports approvingly on the (surprisingly affordable) wine that was served—a red, a white, and a bubbly from California, all chosen by a bipartisan Senate-House tasting committee.

Weird aside: While Obama’s inaugural luncheon was self-consciously all-American and reportedly based on Abraham Lincoln’s favorite dishes (seafood stew; wild game; apple cake), both of Bush’s inaugural luncheons have been… um… weirdly French (lobster gratin—OK, they called it “lobster pie”—enscalloped lobster and crab, and “grenadine of beef Supreme”.)

  1. Remember that Bush was (how I love saying “was” instead of “is”) not really Texan at all, but East Coast Patrician Establishment, a long line of them, and was thus likely to serve fancy foods that would have been right at home on the menu of Delmonico’s circa 1900. I.e., old-school French, heavy on the cream sauces.

  3. Glad some people are enjoying it.
This whole day has got to make must of us gays very sad.
It would be one thing if he just ignored gay issues for now DADT, DOMA, etc. But it is quite another when he cuddles up with Rick Warren, one of the biggest homophobes in America and they censor and delete the lone gay participant.
This whole day makes me feel sick. Even more than the conservative Republicans feel.

  4. I think using Warren was a brilliant strategy of exposing him for the dim-bulb Christianist fool he truly is. His little speech was terrible, and sounded like a relic of the last administration, not this one, in both the way that it sucked as rhetoric and the way that it articulated his triumphal fascism. “Everything we have is because of Jesus” is just insane; what about those who have nothing — is that Jesus’s fault too?

Now we just have to count on regular Americans seeing it for what it was. Er….

  5. what about those who have nothing — is that Jesus’s fault too?

No, it’s their fault for not believing hard enough or for being immoral or, if you’re feeling a little charitable, that’s just God’s will. Ain’t nothin’ you can do about it.
