The Legionaries of Christ, an influential Roman Catholic religious order, has been shaken by new revelations that its founder, who died a year ago, had an affair with a woman and fathered a daughter just as he and his thriving conservative order were winning the acclaim of Pope John Paul II.

Before his death, the founder, the Rev. Marcial Maciel Degollado, had been forced to leave public ministry by Pope Benedict XVI because of accusations from more than a dozen men who said he had sexually abused them when they were students.

Last week, some lawyers and Alaska Natives stood on the sidewalks outside Seattle University to accuse the northwest Jesuits of dumping pedophile priests into isolated Native villages where they wouldn’t get caught.

This week keeps bringing more and more.

  3. True celibacy is as unlikely as breathairianism.
    Human beings need sex every bit as much as we need food. Anyone who says they exist only on air and sunshine is a much a liar as this who claim to be celibate.

  6. The Legionaries of Christ are a super-conservative order, too. They found favor with JPII because their mission was to keep young people in the church. Their priests are pretty much universally good looking, fit, and charismatic, and generally very manly men. The idea was that they would show young men that spending hours on their knees at Adoration on Saturday night made you just as much of a he-man as having your girlfriend on her knees on Saturday night giving you oral pleasure.

    Frankly, they are kind of creepy.

    Although, it wouldn’t surprise me to hear that people knew about their founder’s girlfriend and their kid. People look the other way when priests are involved with adult women, as long as they aren’t embezzling from the church.

    All of that is a big part of the reason I left.

  7. These sex scandals are scandalous to the Catholic Church because they involve adults instead of small children. If the priests had been caught diddling minors, it would have been business as usual.

  8. There have been murmurings in the Catholic church for a long time that priests should be allowed to marry. The priest that baptized me had a girlfriend(because he couldn’t marry) and was an excellent priest. There should be more like him!

  9. Are you saying the Catholic Church give up lying to itself and it’s followers? When I was brainwashed by them, it was the lies that kept the whole thing afloat. Suspending reality is at it’s very core. When they get people to suspend reality they have them in their clutches. Same with any cult.
