Haven’t you heard? Shoplifting is the new shopping.
Police departments across the country say that shoplifting arrests are 10 percent to 20 percent higher this year than last. The problem is probably even greater than arrest records indicate since shoplifters are often banned from stores rather than arrested.
Much of the increase has come from first-time offenders…
My piece on book shoplifting, including the top ten books most desired by shoplifters, is here.

The lady with the “I stole from Walmart” should be wearing “Walmart Stole from America” instead. It would be more honest.
When my partner used to manage a bookstore, he said their #1 stolen book, year after year, was…the Bible. No other title came close.
Hooray for stealing from Wallmart.
Here’s your medal.
Keep up the good work!
The New Red Badge of Courage
I hear the stores are trying to make money off shoplifting too. Which is a great idea in my opinion. The store will not call the police if the shoplifter (or more likely the parents) sign a contract saying you will pay the store several hundred dollars. Everybody wins except for the ass that decides the food in the bulk bin are free samples. No record for the shoplifter and the store makes several hundred dollars almost making it a money making endeavor for security.
