Seattle, and University of Washington:

Just before 2:00 a.m., police were called to the 5200 block of 17th Avenue Northeast after neighbors reported two men firing off rifles and shotguns in an alley.

When officers arrived at the scene, Miles Murphy approached them wearing a German World War II uniform, carrying a rifle affixed with a bayonet.

According to SPD, officers repeatedly ordered Murphy to drop his weapon; when he would not comply, two officers opened fire. Murphy died at Harborview several hours later.

Baltimore and Johns Hopkins University:

A Johns Hopkins University student armed with a samurai sword killed a man who broke into the garage of his off-campus residence early Tuesday, a Baltimore police spokesman said.

Oh Baltimore, how I miss you sometimes.

Jonathan Golob is an actual doctor.

  1. Baltimore: Population approx. 600k, 144 murders so far this year

Seattle: Population approx. 700k, 16 murders so far this year.

Mind you the best BJ I ever got was from a Japanese girl studying at Johns Hopkins so I, too, have found memories.

  2. Comparing the two cities on raw population like that is basically bogus. You need to draw comparisons along class, education, employment, and other demographic lines.

Seattle comes out looking like a Shangri-la.

  3. I’m not sure this is really an apple-to-apples comparison either.

    In Example A. the person wielding the weapon is endangering public safety, and despite repeated warnings from police refuses to disarm, resulting in his being shot and killed by them;

In Example B. the person wielding the weapon is apparently within his own domicile, and in the course of protecting his property from an intruder, kills him in a manner that would not have posed any threat whatsoever to his neighbors.

So, what exactly is it we’re supposed to “compare and contrast” based on these two apparently disparate examples?

  4. Perhaps the comparison is that Seattle is more Eastern European and Baltimore is more East Asian?

Or Seattle is more facist and Baltimore is more feudal?

  5. I don’t get the comparison. I really like B’more on my brief visit there, but it did have the sketchiest Bus Station I’ve ever been to at Midnight.

  6. Baltimore – 64% black

    Seattle – 8% black

BUT!!! – blacks make up over half of the murderers in Seattle every year.

Maybe Seattle needs more more blacks so it can be REALLY COOL like Baltimore!!!

  7. The burglar’s rap sheet includes carrying firearms. Unless there are strict union rules against harming one’s victims (a sort of Kleptocratic Oath), I’d say the burglar posed a threat to the student’s health.
