Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan says that Craigslist is dropping its “erotic services” ads and will create a new adult category that web site employees will review, the Associated Press reports. Craigslist came under renewed pressure to remove the ads after a medical student in Boston was charged with the April killing of a masseuse he met on the site.

  5. What’s strange is that this isn’t the first Craigslist murder. A year or so ago, a young woman was murdered responding to a nanny ad — the ad had actually been placed by a teenager who killed her after he’d lured her over. Her family was really quick to encourage people not to blame the internet and pointed out repeatedly that this wasn’t the fault of Craigslist. It was the fault of someone who was determined to kill and would have found a way to do so regardless. There were no changes made to Craigslist after this happened, nor were any really called for.

    I guess I’m just not sure how this is any different, other than the fact that there’s sex in the mix this time around.

    But C’mon it’s not the fault of Craigslist. Sick people will always find ways to do sick things.

    The reality is that we live in a society where accessability to greater #s of people is growing & growing with social networking sites, etc.

    As a result more and more sickos will be rising to the surface…b/c they now have greater opportunity to commit sick acts.
    If it wasn’t Craigslist, It would be Myspace of Facebook or a random chatroom.

    But I think overall this is a win for the new staff reviewed category, provided they treat the code words the same as print media does. ERS was a dangerous zoo for both providers and clients alike.

    @16: Your “sicko” reference is very offensive and only perpetuates the stereotypes keeping anything publicly erotic “seedy”. It’s one thing to not personally approve, but another to prejudge people who engage in such activities.

  18. @17 – I believe the “sickos” she was referring to are the ones who kill people, not the ones who are interested in alternative lifestyles. At least that’s how I read it.

    The EFF’s blog has some good points about this that go beyond the issue of prostitution which are worth reading.
