This has completely made my day. I love starting out in the morning w/SLOG. Keep up the good work!!
Oh…and Happy Festivus!!
I’m all about the atheism, but these people are kind of giving us a bad name:
“Most people think December is for Christians and view our signs as an intrusion, when actually it’s the other way around,” he said. “People have been celebrating the winter solstice long before Christmas. We see Christianity as the intruder, trying to steal the holiday from all of us humans.”
Steal the holiday? Who cares? The Xtians can have it!
Hilarious – and all about why tactics matter.
As a Christian, I find the theft of the sign more offensive than the fact that it was there to begin with.
Someone will be having an interesting conversation with St Peter………
Ha! Someone turned it in to a country radio station. Perfect!
@2 I agree. This sign doesn’t “celebrate” the winter solstice. That is just complete BS. It blatantly attacks Christianity and I don’t personally think that is cool (in this context). Even people who aren’t particularly religious are moved by nativity scenes, and this is just very aggressive. Not a very smart way to present a position. Would it be smart for Muslims to have a display that purports to “celebrate” Ramadan but really just goes on about how Jesus is just a prophet, not the son of god? No. It would not be smart, only divisive and infuriating, which is what this is.
It’s fun to watch people who believe their best friend is omnipotent feel threatened by some words.
@6, I didn’t mean commenters here, I meant the people who stole the sign.
I think it’s important that atheists get their message out: “We are smug, self-satisfied killjoys.”
i’m pretty damn liberal, but that sign is just fucking annoying. i mean, the christmas tree isn’t decorated with ornaments that spell out “athiests are douchebags.” why the attack? say what you believe and leave it at that.
douchebags.
Don’t like Christmas? Don’t have one.
@9 – No, more like “We are politically and socially marginalized, if not ostracized, for our lack of belief in the flying spaghetti monster”. I mean, seriously, when will we ever have an openly atheist president in this country, and you think *christmas/christians* are under attack?? Right.
But we still like Santa, lights and pine trees in our living rooms…
Come onnnn. I’m offended by the fake baby jesus nearby that is promising to light me on fire so I can burn forever and ever, not the sign that says “there are no devils” and “religion hardens hearts.” Pleeeease.

@12, I guess my mind was too enslaved to glean that from the atheists’ sign. Or perhaps my heart was too hardened by my indoctrination in superstition.
All I know is I’m personally offended by the lack of a plate of spaghetti and meatballs surrounded by pirates in memory of the First Supper of the Flying Spaghetti Monster.
Seriously, if you’re going to mix religion and the state, why choose something so lame as a baby in a manger?
I like the idea behind this sign, but the message they chose is just offensive and inappropriate. Why not have a positive message instead? It seems like they just wanted to provoke an outrage, rather than provide balance for the xmas display.
I liked “Reason’s Greetings!” much better. They should have stuck with that.
As long as any religious group continues to try to get their personal beliefs passed as laws, then I don’t care if they get offended and pouty. If you’re going to use your freedom of speech on others, then expect others to use their freedom of speech on you.
Looks like the work of someone with a hardend heart, and or an enslaved mind. haha
@15 – Lo, the recent rise in pirate attacks is a clear sign of the flying spaghetti monster’s most vengeful wrath over Prop 8, and unto those who would not bow before the awesome power of his noodly appendage.
So it was written. So it shall be.
Christmas is a cultural tradition, and has nothing to do with religion. The atheist who put the sign up is a humorless killjoy. Her campaign could have been designed by Bill O’Reilly. I’m more atheist than she is, and I’ll be goddamned if I’m going to let idiots like her take my Frosty The Snowman away.

Love the Frosty.
