Perhaps this won’t come as much of a surprise, given the venue (an extremely conservative talk-radio show), but ex-Sonic James Donaldson, who announced his mayoral candidacy on KIRO’s Dori Monson show last week, described himself on the show as a “conservative Democrat.” Donaldson, environmentalist Mike McGinn, and executive search consultant Norman Sigler are the only official candidates challenging Mayor Greg Nickels’s reelection bid; Stranger editor Dan Savage has until Friday to declare, and former city council member Peter Steinbrueck is expected to make up his mind early next month.

  1. Donaldson is a conservative. All of his announcement talking points about “more audits!” are Republican code for “stop spending money on social services.” They don’t mind growing the government to pay for auditors and bureaucrats, they just want to stop spending government money to help disadvantaged people.

Predicted primary winners: Mike McGinn & Dan Savage (if he runs for real, otherwise Mike McGinn & Greg Nickels).

  2. @5 nails it. The more people point out Donaldson’s conservative slant, the harder it will be for him to be elected. Hopefully nobody is pulling for him to any great degree since that’s one tree not worth barking (or meowing) up.

  3. Uh, we already have conservative democrats in office. Did you happen to read about the State Senate’s budget proposal today?!

  4. NEWSFLASH: You don’t have to be a conservative to balance a budget or realize that you need to spend less money because you are taking in less money.

  5. Could you and your editor and your paper get your stories together? Savage has until Friday to declare? He says he’s running. You mean he might back out now?
