Seattle police are investigating a drive-by shooting in the Central District after, police say, shots were fired outside of the Garfield Community Center at 23rd and Cherry earlier this evening.

According to SPD spokesman Mark Jamieson, a man and a “juvenile female” were shot on the steps of the community center just before 7:00 p.m. by a gunman in a dark-colored SUV, which was last seen headed westbound on Cherry. Jamieson says the two victims sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to Harborview for treatment.

The block around Garfield High School has been the site of several high-profile shootings in the last year. Former Franklin High School basketball player Donnie Cheatham was blinded in a shooting in December and 15-year-old Quincy Coleman was shot and killed near the school on Halloween.

  1. If only Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson weren’t too busy posing with the Jackson family (although strangely enough they were never close w Michael or his family prior to his death) they could be doing what they get the big bucks for- defending the lives of young black men who are dying as a result of gun violence in this city like nobody’s business. But no, not glamorise enough, not enough media attention to make it worth their while.

Have any of these high-profile shootings been solved?

They are waiting for a white to shoot a black.
Blacks killing blacks is OK with them.
Whites killing blacks is a problem.

Dr King dreamed of a color-blind society.
Al and Jesse didn’t get that memo…

  4. Wow, I just stumbled hung over past that same block at 5 am on Sunday morning. To think I walked in a daze through a corridor that’s seen a ton of violent, deadly crime.
