A dolphin off the coast of California made its feelings known on June 21 when it “leaped onto a boat in Southern California, crashing into a woman and breaking both her ankles.”
This occurred off the coast of Orange County, a Republican stronghold and a dystopian hellscape of car dealerships, balloon arches, and oil refineries. (My grandfather represented this part of the state in the California legislature for 12 years.) Orange County is not far from SeaWorld, where dolphins are trained to be groped by human hands all the livelong day.
The husband of the woman with broken ankles told the Associated Press that “the dolphin jumped and we thought it was doing a flip and I guess it miscalculated.”
Or you miscalculated by living in Orange County? Maybe implicit in the dolphin’s flip was a message? Maybe this was her flipping you off?
In this guy’s defense, he splashed water on the thrashing, bloody dolphin to keep her alive while steering his boat into harbor. Look at these photos of the flipper-off. The smirking cetacean got away, eventually, and the woman got a cast on each leg.
