Move over, pit bulls:

A 2-year-old Florida child died after being strangled by a pet python, police said.

Sumter County Sheriff’s Lt. Bobby Caruthers said detectives are investigating the toddler’s death, but it appeared that the child was strangled by the snake.

Who keeps a python around their toddler?

  1. The same sort of people who keep guns in the house with small children. And remember, we are talking about Florida, after all.

  2. I love snakes. Too bad the owner was irresponsible with it. Question though: did it try to swallow the toddler after killing him/her?

  3. I remember going to buy a water heater from a couple that had a farm near us and I needed to use the bathroom while there. Their kids (toddlers) were playing in the living room and the parents were talking to my friend outside about the purchase. I went into the bathroom and there in some water in the bathtub was an anaconda, a 10′ anaconda with unattended kids in the living room.

  4. A surprising number of “normal” people keep snakes in the house. Most of the ones who let them loose in the house are drug dealers, though.

  5. unbelievably negligent parenting, but snakes can be great pets for the right people. This poor animal probably got been euthanized.

This was a burmese python, a potentially very, very large (Anaconda proportions) animal. There’s no way it should’ve been slithering free with a child around. Criminally irresponsible.

  6. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again:

WTF is Wrong with Florida??? I know, I know, stupid people can be found everywhere, but it does seem that more of them have sprouted in Florida than, say, Minnesota….. Just sayin’….

  7. Who keeps a python around their toddler?

Well, my neighbors have a boa and a toddler. Does that count? Then again, they also have two pit bulls in the backyard.

And yes, for those playing along, I do live in Spokane.
