From Mesa, Arizona’s KPHO News:

A teenage girl accidentally ran over and killed her 17-year-old brother as the two played around in an Arizona shopping mall parking lot. “Apparently some horseplay ensued where he jumped in front of the car and she stopped, he’d get out of the way and as she’d move, he’d jump back out,” said Mesa Police spokesman Ed Wessing. The last time that happened the sister accidentally pressed on the accelerator, was unable to stop and ran over the brother, officers said.

Deep condolences to all involved, as losing someone to fatal horseplay can be a life-ruining mindfuck. One minute you’re goofing around in a shopping mall parking lot on New Year’s Day and the next minute you’re that girl who killed her brother. (Unfortunately, I’m writing somewhat from experience, as fatal horseplay claimed the life of my fifth-grade best friend, who was unloading the dishwasher with his older brother when a kitchen knife inspired a Star Wars-themed light-saber battle, with the attendant horseplay adding up to a severed aorta. I wasn’t there when it happened, but the event made me a lifelong anti-horseplay advocate.)

  1. I have a cousin who accidentally killed his brother with a full swing from a baseball bat in some garage hijinks. It’s truly horrible. There’s a remote chance that this girl might forgive herself in twenty years’ time, but that’s a lot of suffering.

  2. Oh, and I agree about the photo, by the way. You should switch it to a photo of a kid who’s been hit by a car instead. That would be much more relevant.

  3. Glad to see you’re starting off the new year by reinforcing the anti-animal bent of SLOG. Because a decomposing animal is so relevant to the story: ‘Horseplay,’ get it? HORSEplay! Har har.

  4. I hiked with my boyfriend and his kids this weekend. In addition to the constant fighting and shoving at overlooks, his 10-year-old at one point managed to clip her gloves together behind her back, and then ran headlong down the steep, wet, root-bound, leaf-covered trail to show her siblings this hilarious thing. Yes, it is amazing that such a high percentage make it to adulthood.

  5. That is very sad, we need to do more to educate 17 year olds on the dangers of jumping in front of a moving car.

I feel awful for the family but how god damn stupid do you have to be to jump in front of a moving car, christ, how did he even manage to make it to the age of 17 without killing himself by doing else something profoundly stupid? His parents must have spent 17 years trying to stop him from sticking a fork in his eye because he thought it would be funny.

  6. @16,

    Feeling guilty?

Many times, most often when dealing with my own family members or friends, and, no, I’m not going to recount any stories.

  7. @10: Animals die. They also decompose. I don’t see how showing a photo of that — in what is admittedly a pretty bad pun — is “anti-animal.”

  8. I’ve been anti-horseplay my whole life as well, but I’ve never been close to a fatal horseplay experience. I think it’s just risk-averse only-child syndrome.

  9. @ 18, “most often when dealing with my own family members or friends, and, no, I’m not going to recount any stories. “

Enough said. You would have ignored these kids too – until it was too late.

  10. @15: I had when some kid wearing those fucking Heelies (roller-blades in tennis shoes? I’d like to beat the creators senseless). I yanked him when he was about to crash into a glass display full of plates.

Five seconds later, his mother starts getting into my face about how I shouldn’t touch her precious baby.

  11. @23: Every time I see a kid sliding around on those things, I wanna trip them. It’s the perfect crime, everyone would figure the kid just fell over like an idiot because they were screwing around in heelies.

  12. @23: “roller-blades in tennis shoes? I’d like to beat the creators senseless”

As a teacher, I’ll gladly aid and abet. Those shoes are annoying as hell.
