City prosecutors have filed assault charges against a University of Washington fraternity member after a December benefit event near campus turned into an all-out brawl.

Records provided by the city attorney’s office say police were called to the UW campus on December 12th after a 20-year-old man reported he’d been attacked while attending a “Hammered for Humanity” benefit kegger, held by members of the Theta Chi fraternity at a house on NE 45th St and 17th Ave NE.

According to a police report, as the 20-year-old man was leaving the fraternity party with his girlfriend, the man saw a friend being “pushed around” by five Theta Chi members.

The man stepped in to protect his friend and, the report says, was attacked by the five Theta Chi members, who knocked him to the ground and kicked and punched him in the ribs and head.

Police reports say the 20-year-old man was treated at the UW hospital and sustained a cut above his right eye and a bloody nose.

The 20-year-old man identified one of the men allegedly involved in the attack, Eric Buffalow, from a group photo of Theta Chi fraternity members. Prosecutors have charged Buffalow with misdemeanor assault. He has denied any involvement in the attack.

When police interviewed fraternity members about the incident, they were told that the 20-year-old man’s friend was telling anti-Semitic jokes at the party and was “offending Jewish people.” Fraternity members also claimed a “large portion” of Theta Chi’s members are Jewish.

According to University of Washington Greek system advisor Cori Hammock, Theta Chi will go before a standards board to discuss the incident. Hammock would not comment on possible sanctions against the fraternity.

Theta Chi did not return a call for comment.

  28. As a fellow fraternity member in the UW greek system I have some light on the subject. Obviously, there are 3 sides to every story even though that sounds cliche. My fraternity recently had “allegations” towards some members in our house. It was publicized with some facts and some misconceptions. Our house’s rep went down the drain. People often assume that if members of a group threw the party or if they were present, means that they were responsible. Think about that… Also the article says that the victim identified the suspect from a group picture? Hell, I could look at a group picture and find a dude that looks familiar. What’s a 20 year old doing at a keggar anyway? Maybe his judgement was impaired? He was also making anti-semitic jokes? So just because this sounds stereotypical of a frat house, you should wait until the truth comes out before we start pointing fingers. I’m not saying this for the sake Theta Chi, for the community as a whole. Just chill out read what you see, and realize that theres stuff you also don’t see.

  33. Ive been to parties at theta chi, they are nuts on lowering risk and the fact that someone is getting beat up and kicked on the floor is untrue. The only thing they will do is ask the guy to leave if they don’t know them because its an extra liability, not cause they are uncool. Worst case scenario is attracting IFC attention so there is no way they’d strike out unless in self defense let alone bomb on somebody cringing on the floor, and is the same reason why they don’t want to answer a press call. I live right across the street from their house and there always seems to be random bums trying to crash theta chi’s functions probably because on reputation alone they are all year round the craziest and most notoriously animal in the Greek system hands down. all my years ive seen it all, girls go there to strip naked for wild secret orgies and the men are beer pong Olympians.

Too much speculation to have people take it seriously. As a member of the University of Washington Greek system I can tell you that the story is false under many premises. One of which being the fact that, sophomore, Eric Buffalo was charged with misdemeanor assault. All charges were dropped. Also to pick someone out of a photo cannot lead to guilt. If given a composite of any fraternity i can very easily pick out a person. Basically this article holds no accreditation and should not be revered by anyone as holding any truth.
