Huffington Post reports that Giffords’s letters of resignation will be submitted sometime this week, which means there’ll be a special election in Arizona for her congressional seat very soon. Here’s the video announcement of Giffords’s resignation:

  1. This is unbelievably sad. Ms. Giffords embodies courage, determination and faith.

I can’t help but have the feeling that the bad guys won this one.

May we dedicate ourselves to fight back and re-win our democratic victories inspired by this hero?

  2. I agree, @1 & 2. I hope her progress toward a full recovery continues to be remarkable. And that we will see her return to public service soon.

  3. She’s making the right decision. She needs to focus all her energy on her recovery right now. Trying to represent her district in Congress would be too much of an additional strain. I hope she makes it back to the point where running for public office in the future is an option, if that’s something she desires. Good luck to her and her husband.

  4. I was splitting time between Seattle and Tucson when she first ran for her seat. Campaigned for her and Napolitano. Tucson is a small mecca of reason in the state. Loved Giffords and wish her and hers all the best.

  5. Oh, and an aside: Paul, if you want to retain some credibility, find a source other than the Huffington Post. Yes, it’s a bastion of the liberal left. It’s also the guardian and promoter of all the left anti-science conspiracy theorist types that are really more akin to tea partiers and faux news watchers. The prevalence of of anti medicine anti vaccination “reporting” probably is killing people.

  6. I hope her constituents are smart enough that they’ll overwhelmingly elect whoever Gabby endorses in the special election.

@4: You could be a) the most clueless person on the face of the earth, b) the most insensitive and crass person in history, or c) the writer of the most inappropriate snark ever. None of those categories are mutually exclusive; it’s quite possible that you’re all three.

  7. Excuse me…there seems to be something in my eye.

I moved away from Ms. Giffords’ district just a few weeks before she was elected. I always found her to be an impressive public servant in AZ and later in congress (which is frankly not something I can say about very many people at all), even before all of this. She will be missed.
