Punchline Magazine investigates:

I chatted with Gallagher’s manager Craig Marquardo to find out what happened. “I don’t think he knew how aggressive Maron would be,” Marquardo said, adding that Gallagher is not at all sorry for walking out on the interview and that Gallagher “doesn’t care.” In fact, Marquardo relayed that after Gallagher left the interview he was seen being mobbed by fans on the street, where the comic took pictures with fans and signed autographs. “Where would you rather be?” Marquardo said.

Marquardo added, “I respect what Marc was trying to do, but he did it in a douchey way.”

But Maron doesn’t see it exactly that way. “I’m in the game of conversation,” Maron tells me. “I don’t want to be talked down to. If I was being douchey it was a reaction to being condescended to and dismissed.”

Maron continues: “I’m generally more sympathetic than I am attack-oriented. I didn’t get into this [podcasting] to be Mike Wallace.”

And regarding the Twitter feed:

Finally, the Twitter account @RealGallagher that’s been causing a bit of a stir today, is totally fake, according to Marquardo, who explained that Gallagher has been on a plane to Japan and couldn’t have possibly written those tweets.

The Twitter feed started on January 28th. Gallagher has been on a plane to Japan…for three days? (Also they have internet on planes now, bro. FYI.) Anyway, it probably is fake. The relevant point here is that Gallagher’s real-life act is so bizarre and offensive that that Twitter feed is completely plausible. I addressed that at the bottom of this post.

Thank you for following GallagherStormsOffPodcastAndIsTheTwitterThingRealOrFakeGate 2011. And if this isn’t truly my last Gallagher-related blog post ever, I am going to sledgehammer myself in the brains. Apologies to any of you in the splash zone.

UPDATE: New theory: GALLAGHER’S MANAGER IS FAKE.

I want my life back.

Lindy West was born an unremarkable female baby in Seattle, Washington. The former Stranger writer covered movies, movie stars, exclamation points, lady stuff, large frightening fish, and much, much more....

  1. NOTE: The more a stand up comedian pisses you off, the more you want to protest them, either online or to picket their shows. Seriously, stand up comedians wear these as a badge of honor, if ONLY people will protest me!!! They have to conjur up new ways to piss you off, to force a protest so they can get on the news.

So even if what the comedian is saying, really is being said by them and not someone with a fake account, sure get the word out, but avoid the local protest.

  2. why the fuck does anybody care?

shit. this may not be the blog for me anymore. i want to write this to a majority of the posts lately.

  3. Calling Maron “douchey”? You would need the patience of St. Francis to deal with Gallagher’s hostility for a full hour. And Marc Maron is no saint. Also, he managed to navigate interviews with Robin Williams, Dane Cook, and Carlos Mencia while asking some pretty pointed, direct questions and they didn’t walk out on him. But then there’s a reason they’re still famous and Gallagher is a bitter old unfunny joke.

And yes, let this be the end to any discussion of Gallagher, anywhere, ever.

  4. I still don’t understand how you went from the baseline: Gallagher doesn’t even know what the hell a “Podcast” is
To: Yes, two days later, elder Gallagher has opened a twitter account (the easiest to fudge internet thingy) while he is on tour.

I also want to reiterate that the man is 64 years old.

I still enjoy you Lindy, but I question you sometimes….sorry!

  5. jesus Lindy, if you want to spent that much of your life dogging an old fart, give me a call, I’m a lot better looking and now where near as bitter as that has been.

  6. WTF is just about my favorite podcast, but Maron, being a guy who used to do rails with Kinison, crying about homophobic jokes is just pathetic. Making fun of white people while being snarky and meta is not the only acceptable form of comedy. Jim Jefferies and Bill Burr are probably the two best stand up comics today, by and large because they dont play by the PC leftist indie comedy creed of not offending minorities. And Bill Burrs girlfriend is about as black as they get.

  7. Oh, and Lindy, perhaps you already know this, but Maron is booked at Laughs in Kirkland the last weekend of February…p’raps an opportunity for a follow-up interview..???

  8. It seems like Marc Maron is cool with people who might send some work his way (like Judd Apatow or Patton Oswalt), but turns into a big dick when he senses that he can step on someone to generate some buzz.

Gallagher is a cranky old creep, but he’s a legendary prop comic. And his jokes are pretty tame compared to Maron favs like Doug Stanhope and Eddie Pepitone. (Doug Stanhope has a whole bit title F* the Jews) I was kind of interested in hearing Gallagher’s weird stories from his own mouth, but he got badgered out of the room.

  9. The really sad thing is that, when Gallagher is inevitably found dead from auto-erotic asphyxiation (surrounded by gay porn featuring), Lindy will be contacted by the world’s news media as “the foremost expert on the controversial comedian.”

Of course that’s still preferable to the calls Savage will get when Santorum dies…

  10. Your theory that the manager is a fake isn’t too far off, actually:

Moreover just a quick googling of his Music Spectator site reveals, for instance, that the answers of his featured “interview” with Katy Perry were presumably just copied-and-pasted from an original interview conducted by Tamara Palmer. But judge for yourselves I guess:

    Craig Marquardo’s interview (http://www.musicspectator.com/celebrity-&hellip😉
Tamara Palmer’s interview, which was also republished by Chicago Tribune (http://chicago.metromix.com/music/articl&hellip😉

  11. Maron would have done better to quote Gallagher’s routine, let Gallagher respond, quote him again, let Gallagher respond, etc. Just keep presenting the evidence.

I mean, the dude presents a can of fruit cocktail, tells the audience it represents “the queers,” and then smashes it with a hammer as the crowd goes wild.

“Are your jokes homophobic?” does not begin to communicate the jaw-dropping creepiness of Gallagher’s routine.

  12. “And if this isn’t truly my last Gallagher-related blog post ever, I am going to sledgehammer myself in the brains. Apologies to any of you in the splash zone.”

This is a good way to end. By taking his shtick and actually making it funny. But you knew that.
