Remember when Seattle Out And Proud moved the pride parade downtown and the yahoos at the SGN and the gay community center—which bankrupted itself running an alternate march on the Capitol Hill—had a two-year-long shit fit about it? Remember being told over and over again that Capitol Hill was hard won queer space and the historic home of the GLBTQITSXYZPDQ community (not true) and so moving this big gay event off Capitol Hill represented a slap in the face to our gay elders who fought so hard to create this wonderfully safe space for all us queers here on Capitol Hill and that SOAP’s wildly-popular-if-financially-bungled decision to move the parade downtown—in addition to being a BETRAYAL of all gay people EVERYWHERE for ALL TIME—was going to ruin EVERYTHING because GAY STUFF HAD TO STAY ON GAY CAPITOL HILL IN ORDER TO KEEP CAPITOL HILL GAY and if we let ANY gay stuff move off Capitol Hill EVER pretty soon we wouldn’t EVEN HAVE a gay neighborhood anymore and then WHERE WOULD WE WALK OUR TINY DOGS AND WEAR OUR TIGHT TROUSERS WITHOUT FEAR?!?!?!?!?
Lifelong AIDS Alliance moved Gay Bingo from Capitol Hill to some place called “Fremont” this year—and there’s nothing in the SGN’s write up about how the move represents a betrayal all gay people everywhere or how Lifelong just took a dump on the faces of our gay elders, etc., etc.
Weird.
Once again, Fremont proves that not only do we have all the cool Soccer bars, we also have all the Gay Bingo.

yep, kinda old news. I actually prefer the hill being less-gay now. its more diverse, better off, and calmer in general. but that could be a function of the monied crowd that lives here too now.
Pride parade started downtown, too. It originally ran from Pioneer Square (the historic home of Gay Seattle) to Westlake. It moved up to the Hill in, I’m going to guess, 1981? I’m probably off there. Book’s at home.
Gay Bingo is for people who’ve never been. Tiresome as hell otherwise.

Bingo was at South Lake Union for the past few years. I stopped going/volunteering when they let Glamazon go.
I’m all for moving gay stuff to different neighborhoods, so long as West Seattle isn’t one of them. Better to take over the city than just a neighborhood.

It’s the same story with most niche populations: The old, organizing-type Gays are ridiculously out of touch with reality and the obvious nuances of human interaction, leaving the cool, younger realist Gays staying as far the hell away from Gay organizing as they possibly can. Yawn.
