An email from someone at Rainy Dawg Radio (UW’s college radio station):

UW students appreciated your response to John Fay’s article in The Daily last week. Students have organized Students for a Hate Free Daily and are hosting a rally Friday at 12:30pm on the HUB lawn. We don’t want this to go unnoitced and would appreciate your support. Thanks.

Friday. Noon-thirty. HUB lawn. Write it down. (Pointless aside: I seem to remember almost strangling the entire staff of a College Republicans booth on that very lawn once…)

Christopher Frizzelle was The Stranger's print editor, and first joined the staff in 2003. He was the editor-in-chief from 2007 to 2016, and edited the story by Eli Sanders that won a 2012 Pulitzer...

  1. I sincerely hope SfaHFD are protesting something beyond this kid’s article. The whole point of going to college is to get exposed to a broader intellectual universe than your backyard/bellbutton. I happen to think that Fay is a douchebag, but the proper response to ignorant speech is enlightened speech.

  2. “be seen,” I’ve never heard of you before. Perhaps if you posted under your normal pen name, I would take your ad hominems more seriously. But probably not.

  3. @2, As far as I know, they’re protesting irresponsible journalism. The group says they want to encourage dialogue, but want the Daily to present an intelligent counterpoint to their view. I think it’s less about the sentiment, more about the misquoting of the constitution, thinly disguised hate speech, oh yeah, and the graphic implying homosexuality=bestiality.

  4. @8, is there any counterpoint against homosexuality that is actually intelligent? Or anything they would actually consider intelligent? “Irresponsible journalism” seems to be “opinions I disagree with” most of the time. We should be attacking Fay’s hateful opinions and beliefs, not the paper itself.

  5. @9 Amen.

A shitty article is just that, and harassing a bunch of student journalists isn’t the answer. When it comes down to it, this was an editorial. The answer might for UW students to write letters and editorials back. But protesting?

  6. Maybe this has already been suggested somewhere (not necessarily on Slog), I don’t check Slog every day: Could the illustration accompanying Fay’s editorial be a dig at Fay? I wonder if illustrations AS WELL AS EDITORIALS (and everything else in the Daily) are reviewed before going to press. I don’t know if Fay knew what, if any, illustration was going to be used next to his article. Who drew the illustration?
