Via Wonkette, we learn that Focus on the Family is laying off 202 people, about twenty percent of its current workforce. Apparently, they blew all their money fighting Proposition 8.

The cutbacks come just weeks after the group pumped more than half a million dollars into the successful effort to pass a gay-marriage ban in California.

Critics are holding up the layoffs, which come just two months after the organization’s last round of dismissals, as a sad commentary on the true priorities of ministry.

“If I were their membership I would be appalled,” said Mark Lewis, a longtime Colorado Springs activist who helped organize a Proposition 8 protest in Colorado Springs on Saturday. “That [Focus on the Family] would spend any money on anything that’s obviously going to get blocked in the courts is just sad. [Prop. 8] is guaranteed to lose, in the long run it doesn’t have a chance — it’s just a waste of money.”

  1. Fighting for Prop 8.

Focus on the Family fight for it means we will have to fight against it causing us “The Gays” et al. to spend more of our money too, on lawyers and junk. We could have been spending it in other states. They are keeping other states safe by fighting us in CA so we can’t infiltrate Colorado or Washington yet or the other blue states.

  2. But the quote says, “The cutbacks come just weeks after the group pumped more than half a million dollars into the successful effort to pass a gay-marriage ban in California. ” —which sounds like the group was SUPPORTING prop 8, not fighting it…

  3. “Too late” for Prop 8, indeed… but it sounds like Prop 8 was a money-sink for at least two hateful non-profits who seemed motivated to promote this hateful measure at ANY cost. This, on the verge of an economic crisis that causes both their donations and retail sales to potentially dry up abruptly.

Maybe it’s all that damned optimism and hope left over from Saturday, but what if we could bring a few more of these regressives down, in one way or another? Lose a battle, win a way bigger war?

(Me, I’m still pissed about having “The Strong-Willed Child” inflicted on me in my teenage years… revenge tastes sweet.)

  4. Hehe. Excellent. Those quacks have ruined Colorado with their megachurces and anti-gay legislation.

And its not too late for Prop 8 – it may very well be overturned in court.

  5. Color me unsympathetic. These people were making a living from bigotry. Fuck ’em.

And Prop 8 will be seen as an eventual gay triumph for spurring the human rights activists into action. The younger generation will see to that. Be patient. Forceful, but patient. Equal rights will come.
