That’s kinda like this.

All over the country, accidental shootings are treated like unfortunate accidents. That dead baby’s family has “suffered enough,” we’ll be told. So why compound it by throwing a family member in jail?

That’s exactly the way our nation treated drunk driving deaths for three quarters of a century. But now we tend to charge the drivers with manslaughter or homicide, even in the death of a family member. And that’s exactly the attitude shift we need to have with “accidental” shootings.

Clearly, the potential death or maiming of a loved one isn’t enough of a deterrent to get some gun owners to handle their weapons responsibly (or perhaps, responsibly choose not to handle a gun at all). So just like we’ve done with drunk drivers, we need to stop feeling sorry for the shooters, and start throwing their asses in jail. After all, nothing in the Second Amendment says you have the right to shoot a baby.
