Tonight at 5:30 p.m. in Victor Steinbrueck Park, there’s a homeless rally/camp-out that includes a community meal as well as a “sunset ritual” to remember the homeless who have died so far this year.
The rally is being thrown by a coalition of homeless advocates in response to news that the Committee to End Homelessness in King County (CEHKC) canceled a governing board meeting set for tomorrow. The advocate coalition, called Occupy CEHKC, criticizes the move in today’s press release, saying “When important decisions need to be made it’s no time for a vacation… The Governing Board should take a stand on whether or not to bulldoze Nickelsville.” The coalition’s current focus is to support encampments, and more specifically to save the homeless encampment Nickelsville. If you remember, Seattle City Council unanimously voted last month to shut Nickelsville down by September 1.
Following the camp-out at Steinbrueck Park, the advocates are holding their own meeting on the issue:
Since we in the homeless community can’t take a break from being homeless, we decided to hold our Own Governing Board Meeting. This is a chance for everyone to see how to really end homelessness. CEHKC’s [Committee to End Homelessness In King County] Governing Board, in particular, is invited and welcomed!
That meeting will be held tomorrow, at 8:35 a.m., in YWCA’s Opportunity Place downtown.
