The Bellevue Sushi Land—excuse me, Marinepolis Sushi Land—was shut down yesterday pending investigation by the King County Department of Public Health. According to Eater Seattle, two incidences of salmonella were linked to the restaurant.
Tear. Am I the only one who will miss the Eastside’s super-cheap, delightfully decrepit sushi place while it’s being poked and prodded by health inspectors? Whenever I eat there, I feel like I’m in a factory—but in a good way, like I’m a very meta robot reconstructing myself out of pieces of nigiri on the robot assembly line. Plus: They have free tea! What’s not to love? Here’s to hoping for a quick re-open—salmonella be damned.

That type of place can be okay, if you go during busy hours. If you go when it’s slow, you’re likely to be grabbing a piece of sushi that’s been on the conveyor belt a while.
I was like ‘Not Sushi Land Nooooo’. I eat there all the time.
It’s so awful it’s awesome.
Oh, just the Bellevue one is closed? Sweet, I’ll get my salmonella at the Queen Anne one.
Reminds me how everyone wants to eat at Thai Tom’s even after they got busted for having roaches.
The plates on the belt go round and round, round and round….. There is technology on the plates (little bar codes on the little pedestals) for tracking the time-on-belt so they can ‘retire’ old passenger food. I can guarantee you this is not in use there. (I used to eat there all the time, the prices were low and the quality OK-ish). Eastside has a few decent Sushi joints, my favorite is the tiny Sushi-in-Joy in that little strip mall on N. Bellevue Way just before 520.
Salmonella be damned? You’ve never had salmonella poisoning, have you?
I used to eat there occoasionally when I worked in south Bellevue. I’m not surprised about this, and it won’t stop me from considering the place again if I’m in the area and need lunch. Stuff happens.

I love Sushiland and even comparing it to its mid-price competitors (Genki, Blue-C, etc) it comes out on top. I will say that the Bellevue location seems a bit more run-down than the Queen Anne location, so if you can make the trek, I’d say just relocate to the West side. Food poisoning at a place like this doesn’t bother me that much – it shouldn’t happen and I’d like to see things cleaned up, but these things seem to strike even the highest-end restaurants if they’re unlucky or uncareful. Hopefully that will change.
