I knew it wasn’t just me: “Seattle near bottom of U.S. “manliest” cities.”

  1. You got that right, Constant. I’m a cursing, spitting, sports-watching, girl-ogling, hairy-chested, shit-talking and -taking manly man. Watch out!

  2. Apparently having a population affluent enough to afford nice furniture and to hire people to fix shit is a negative. Speaking of which, I’m off to Ikea.

  3. They mean white-trash manly, not manly-manly, as previous commenters have pointed out.

Seattle men, straight and gay alike, are as bearded and lumberjacky as they come, in many cases, but adapt to business casual situations with ease and are usually educated enough to converse on more than just horsepower, tobacco, and fishing.

  4. I know how to plumb (hint: 99% of the time it’s the u-bend, ask any lesbian), I have bounced, I’ve hunted, fished, cleaned my own kills, played sports until my blindness became intolerable to teammates and am the scariest Spurs fan ever.

Glad to bring the score down by liking man-butt!

  5. The first night I lived in Seattle, from out of my window I heard someone yelling window in absolute seriousness “Shut the fuck up or I’ll fucking kill you you son of a bitch” to someone in the alley behind my apartment in what was perhaps the most comically non-threatening voice I’d ever heard in my life.

  6. Seattle is not manly. Beards do not a man make. Well, they sort of do, but Seattlites do it because it is hip, not because they are manly.

How do I know this? In regards to single men, ask the ladies. They’ll tell you the men here are to scared to even strike up a conversation (on average!). Also, the “Uptight Seattlite” is a perfect representation (he is not fictional). Seattle men like to talk/complain, but don’t like to do.

As for married men, they are dominated by their wives and kids. I have only anecdotal evidence of this. It seems that the married men here try so hard to be fair that their wife dominates them.

Also, Soccer is popular in Seattle. Yes, I know it is a skill and requires athleticism, blah blah, still unmanly.

Gay dudes in Seattle are not manly. Exhibit A: Dan Savage. He doesn’t like guitar music (super unmanly!). He watches plays (yes, plays = theater = super unmanly). He writes books about his family (and probably reads a lot too!). He watches his weight like a super model and makes a conscious effort to stay in shape (instead of having a job that naturally keeps him in shape…like a farmer). The list could go on, but you get the point.

Manly = guitar-luvin, beer-drinking (Budweiser!), football watching, red-meat eatin, two-timing, hard-livin, and finally free to do whatever one wants and to hell with the consequences.

On the flip side, most Seattle men are responsible (which is really unmanly). So, there is something to be said for them.

  7. @18: If “hamster” is a new term for a bear-like hipster or gay hipster, then damn, you’ve just started a trend.

And there is no shame in being a male lesbian, even if you do not like the ladypie. Just remember: the upward head-nod is a greeting and not an invitation to fight, even if you DO like the womancake.

  8. i’ll strike up a conversation with any woman in this town. but i’m not single.

if women don’t like it, TAKE THE MATTERS INTO YOUR OWN HANDS. isn’t that what feminism gave you gals the power to do?

  9. “As for married men, they are dominated by their wives and kids. It seems that the married men here try so hard to be fair that their wife dominates them. “

Sums up my husband as long as he doesn’t care – soon as he cares tho’ – totally different story. He’s not dominated then!

  10. #’s 3,6,7, and 19 have got it.

“Real” men, like “real” Americans, are Republican, Straight (or Closeted), Married, Under-educated Gawd-fearin’ souls who can’t be bothered with silly trifles like culture, schoolin’, or civility. Real men drink beer, watch professional wrasslin’, drive Amurican trucks, and beat their uppity wives. Yup, them’s “real” manly men.

  11. Home repair doesn’t require *that* many tools. If a guy has a shit ton of tools in his house, he doesn’t actually use them. He buys them to show off or to bond with other men at the hardware store.

  12. I believe the report said Portland was even less manly than Seattle. Neither city has enough hardware stores.

  13. The article says that Oklahoma City is the third manliest city. Guess that’s why it was such a one-sided affair when those fuckers took the Sonics.

  14. I live in Nashville, and believe me: compared to the vast majority of the south, Nashville is a metrosexual paradise. I think they are judging Nashville by Tennessee, and yes their criteria is “redneck” not “manly” which are actually contradictory in my book.

  15. I had no idea I was testosterone-impaired because I have never been to a monster truck rally. I suppose having a beard doesn’t make up for the fact that I only watch the Super Bowl for the commercials.

Maybe I should start watching reruns of Hee Haw before I start growing breasts…

  16. Seattle men could stand to be a lot less wimpy and insecure. My friends and I are tired of going on first dates with guys we’ve just met and then receiving angry emails insulting us after we decide we aren’t interested, yet implying that if they misread our behavior they’re sorry, and that they really would be into “pursuing our commonalities.”

It’s pathetic, especially when you can tell the guy spent hours constructing the damn thing, because while blaming YOU for not being interested (like you should have known during your initial conversation instead of leading him on) he also really wants you to be impressed by his intelligence. And, oh yeah, did he mention that he’d still give you another chance if you changed your mind?

  17. Yeah there is definitely nothing manly about guys that can put up with 6 months of darkness and rain without killing themselves. Nothing manly about guys who can out-drink the men in most major cities. Nothing manly about guys that mountain climb, fish, and okay I give up.

  18. I knew there was a reason why I lived here.

Obviously, it goes w/out saying that this is a total load of crap, but for once it’s a total load of crap that caters to my preferences and I get to revel in it. Yay!

@35 – I don’t know, I’m hardly a super model but in my close to 17 years living in Seattle I haven’t had any trouble finding men to fuck and/or date (yup, even beyond the first date). I’ve heard tell of the wimpy man phenomenon you described but have never encountered it in real life. I think it’s actually just a marketing gimmick like the metrosexual (As in hmm, maybe we can get men to buy all the ridiculous crap that women do–yeah, that worked well. Most straight men aren’t insecure enough about their looks to waste their money on make up and hair products–and good for them.) but in reverse, or a dastardly patriarchal conspiracy (oops, my feminism is showing).

A guy who is “blaming YOU for everything” sounds more like an asshole than a wimp, while someone who writes “pursuing our commonalities” is just grammatically retarded (Aren’t wimpy guys supposed to be smart? That’s how the stereotype goes, right?).
