That’s right. Ingraham High School found out yesterday that their school will be featured on the ESPN series “RISE UP Powered by EAS.” As the video below shows, everyone is super excited by the news.
And this hunk delivered the news to the school, whose athletic facilities—including the gym floor, bleachers, weight and locker rooms—will undergo a renovation over the summer.
Ingraham was selected along with three other schools in Boston, Chicago, and Wellstone, Ohio. None of the schools applied to be featured in the program. Instead ESPN looked for schools around the country that needed help. The series is scheduled to air in September. Here’s a peek at what ESPN did at Eleanor McMain Secondary School in New Orleans.

@4 I knew it. Within 5 comments we have our first “Ew, why would they give the money to sports” comment.
It’s an infuriating contrast that’s been a part of Slog for quite a while. Posters and commenters bemoan the fact that children are out of shape, sedentary and unhealthy, but whenever something comes up that is even tangentially related to sports, people are all “ew, icky sports!” Guess what? Sports get children in shape, active and healthy! Athletics are very, very important for youth and provide benefits we value! Get over your stupid bias.
Wow and at Ingraham where the district wanted to fire their principal. That guy is such a do-nothing what with helping their IB program start and be successful, patiently waiting for the tree issue to be resolved for a new addition to the building to get started and now, having another new program come to Ingraham( APP) and welcoming that group with open arms.
And, of course, having the support of staff AND parents. How does Martin Floe keep his job?
Ingraham is fortunate to get this upgrade because it is only one of three of the SPS high schools who did not (and will not, for decades) get a full renovation. (The other two are Rainier Beach and Chief Sealth.)
At Ingraham, the same kids who are in the band, taking art classes, and singing their hearts out in the musical are the kids who are on the various teams. Sure, not 100%, but for many students that fluidity is the advantage of a small high school. It’s all connected, this is helping raise the tide for everyone.

@7 thank you. It’s embarrassing we do need a reality show to step in with a PR donation, but we do need it, and athletics are important.
Besides, if this at all frees up Ingraham’s budget won’t this give every non-sports program there a shot in the arm too?
School sports haven’t kept anybody from being fat. Fatties wheeze it out and go back to their regular sedentary and shit-eating habits at home when the bell rings, that’s where all the damage is done. Not because of the milk machine in the lunch room or whatever.
@11 I’m looking at the Ingraham High School athletics page on their website right now. You can see team photos for most of the sports offered. I’m not seeing a bunch of obese, sickly-looking, out of shape kids in those pictures. Gee, I wonder why that could be?

I went to Ingraham. We used to fill up both bleachers, and we were a small school even then. It looks like the school is only 1/3rd as big as it used to be. Also, the basketball gym is pretty nice; I remember there used to be a lot of tournaments there.
The lower gym and weightroom are pretty pathetic tho, they were jammed in to the old nuclear fallout shelter.
ingopixel, shut the fuck up. Sports build confidence, promote health and help kids socialize. Ask the Bravo Network why they can’t step their shit up if you’re so upset, but don’t bitch here.
