Saturday, March 27, at approximately 1:00 a.m., three teenagers picking a fight ended up face down on the ground getting a lecture.

According to a Seattle police report, two women and a man were walking from Dick’s in Wallingford on North 45th Street when three teenage boys “purposefully crossed the street” towards them. The boys “appeared to be intoxicated” and were taunting the women, “calling them bitches and other names.” The man attempted a display of protective male ownership and put his arms around the women, hoping it would convince the boys to back off. But “puffing out their chests” and pushing up against the man, the suspects challenged the man to a fight.

The police report continues that “without any provocation” one of the boys allegedly punched the man in the eye, “fracturing his orbital bone so severely, surgery will be needed to repair the injury.” The other two boys also allegedly began punching the man. The report states that the women tried to intervene, but the boys fought them off, punching one woman in the jaw, and kicking the other in the leg.

Seeing the fight, a motorist pulled over and helped the victims pin the suspects to the ground, at which time, one of the women, a local teacher, took the opportunity to “lecture the suspects about their behavior,” the police report says. Suddenly helpless and faced with authoritarian control, the boys lost their roosterish bravado and admitted to being 17-year-olds who attend Roosevelt High School.

The victims called 911 to report the crime but could not get an officer to respond, the report says. Later, in an interview with police, one of the victims said that she may go to the high school and speak with the suspects’ principal about their behavior.

  1. What, no guns? Just teenagers getting into fist-a-cuffs over girls? How 1950s.

Jeez, these Wallingford boys wouldn’t last 2 seconds in the CD…..

  2. “The man attempted a display of protective male ownership …”

1993 called. It wants its grad school feminism back.

  3. Ummm… So two people were brutally assaulted in front of witnesses and they couldn’t get a goddamn cop to show up? Did these little bastards even get arrested? What the hell is up with that?

  4. @3. Grad School? More like 9th grade.

Did the women attempt a display of feminine meekness and submission? And more importantly, were they wearing pink?

  5. That’s the type of young men that present culture is creating, calling women names, assaulting and disrespecting their elders. I sincerely hope that not only one of the victims goes to their school but that this serves as a wake up call and all responsible adult end up involving themselves more in our youths lives not only in the schools but in the after school activities, clearly our youth need it for their proper rearing, and adults need it for their safety.

  6. Next time, have the cops tell you in advance if they will show up, so you can beat the lights out of the kids. I mean, if the cops aren’t showing up for one beating, why would they show up for the second one?

  7. @7. So it would have been okay if they had “just” been calling men names, or assaulting and disrespecting their juniors? This is fucked up behavior regardless of the target. I’m not really sure how shunting responsibility for assault away from these kids (and they’re quite nearly adults in the legal sense) solves anything in any case.

This incident is proof that the cops fail. This is precisely the type of thing we would even care to have police exist for, and they dropped the ball. Why am I paying their salaries if all they do is arrest my dealer and let me get beat up?

  8. So many dicks!

    1. The restaurant
    2. The drunk kids
    3. The cops for not showing up to an assault call
    4. The woman for involving the school

  9. @19,

Since the police refused to get involved, I have to disagree with point four. These kids need to face consequences somewhere. I’d prefer their asses be thrown in jail of course.

  10. “The victims called 911 to report the crime but could not get an officer to respond”

This is the part that really appalls me. Seriously, WTF? An assault like this, and the cops can’t be bothered? SPD needs to get their shit together. This is unacceptable.

  11. A vicious assault in progress, and you can’t get a cop to come?

Maybe the Second Amendment folks are right; do we have to arm ourselve to have some sense of basic protection?

Witnesses and victims should’ve beat the shit out of them, so their injuries would at least make them recognizable at school the next day.

  12. @7, you’re not accounting for the thousands of teenagers in the nearby area that were in the middle of their REM cycle when this happened. “AGHH, teenagers get into unprovoked fights?! Goodness! The world is ending! Obama is the antichrist!! Society is to blame!!!”

This was only news because of the thoughtful way it was handled. Touche to the teacher and passing motorist.

  13. @20 – well, it’s a Will block. Still, if they were walking, takes a good 5-10 minutes. A lot of the blocks are longer N-S than E-W between the two locations, and some of the block widths are pretty narrow.

  14. Seriously, I hope the Stranger sees the real story here; it’s about the Police not showing up. That should be a series of stories wherein the Stranger tries to get to the bottom of this.

…and we want to add tickets to aggressive panhandlers to the list of things cops must be doing so that they can’t/don’t respond to actual beatings?

  15. Wow. Cops were too busy looking for smelly people bumming change to answer a real assault call. Good thing the city counsel is poised to put even MORE resources into stopping smelly people bumming change. It’s not like we need fast response times to assaults like this and the one the killed the tuba man.

    Sheesh

  16. I wish it had been me they started shit with. I carry mace (due to seeing a few instances like this although not quite a severe). These thugs are like the KKK. They want power and it will continue to get worse until people fight back. The worse thing about incidents like this is that by not being punished it reenforces the idea they can act like this without consequence

  17. Remember when seconds count the police are minutes away…if they show up at all. Take responsibility for your own safety, get a concealed pistol permit and buy a gun, and get proper training in its use.

  18. SHOCKER, the cops didn’t show up when called. The difference is that it happened north of the Ship Canal bridge. I live on the Hill in a residential area and have called the cops and never had them show up, as has a friend (repeatedly). I’m tempted to just tell them there’s a shitload of jaywalkers and cars parked the wrong direction and see if that brings them faster than “some guy is trying to jimmy my neighbor’s car open”.

  19. What the flying fuck? My boyfriend was assaulted in Belltown, requiring an ER visit. The cops let the fuckers go as well. In Seattle I guess you can just beat the shit out of anyone you want and our police force just yawns and downs another donut.

  20. OWNAGE!

@1: No, that’s just bad physics. Assuming of course, by breaking an orbital you mean putting more than two electrons in it…

  21. “you can’t get a cop to come?”

Please, this isn’t the CD. This is teens from the ’50s having fist-a-cuffs at Dicks, not ‘Homey’s-got-a-glock’.

All is still well in Seattle’s Great White North, you all should come up and visit sometime. Mayberry for liberals.

  22. I wonder if one of the victims had told the 911 dispatcher that they were going to shoot the attackers if a cop didn’t come if they would’ve sent a cop. This really pisses me off. It’s reminiscent of that guy in Cleveland who’s daughter was kidnapped, he found the house where she was being kept, called 911 and after more than an HOUR the cops still hadn’t shown up so he tried to free her himself.

  23. Key words to use in any violence report call to 911:

“I can’t tell but it sure looks like he’s got a weapon!!!”

“Fuck it, I’m getting my weapon out too”

    then hang up.

Police will arrive in half time.
