A mother of three has been hit and killed by flying glass from a bottle thrown at a crowded Manchester pub.

Emma O’Kane, 27, was at the bar early this morning with friends after Boxing Day when a man who was refused entry by doormen threw the bottle, which hit a pillar and smashed, police said

Ms O’Kane was hit by a piece of glass in the neck and collapsed. She was pronounced dead Fairfield hospital.

Detectives have launched a murder investigation and said Ms O’Kane had not been involved in the dispute at the door of the Queen Anne Hotel on Market Street in Heywood, Greater Manchester.

Ms O’Kane lived in Heywood with her partner and three children aged six, two and one.

The whole sad business brings to mind a line from Band of Horses’ “Marry Song”: “Lucky ones are we all until it is over/Everyone near and far.”

  2. “launched an investigation?” The case seems like a clear 1st degree manslaughter, done and done.

And, are bars typically busy early in the morning?

  3. All of these cold hearted comments are exactly what I’d expect to follow this awful slog entry. Charles, your writting is so sterile, I wonder if you are capable of any meaningful human interaction at all.

  4. @3 and 7: it took place in Manchester, not London or Hertfordshire, so it has to have been a City fan.

It seems almost like a Six Feet Under opening.

  5. It didn’t take place in Manchester, it took place in Heywood. More likely to be a Bolton fan than City or United. Maybe even Bury or Rochdale or Oldham United. Greater Manchester’s a big place.
