I went to college in Ohio. I was always happy to know that if necessary I could simply drive home to Pittsburgh to get an abortion. Just a few hours drive and then I could have recouped at Mom’s house. I never needed to but if I, or one of my friends, had been in need I would have. I loved my college but central, rural Ohio is kinda terrifying.

Just go to a sham doctor, one who doesnt have sophisticated equipment needed to register a heartbeat. Half of all those “Pregnancy Centers” are basically a sham, this should be no different.
There are no secular justifications for these bullshit laws. Ohio is a theocracy.
What is it with this pro-life obsession with fetal heartbeat? I have heard so many pro-lifers talk about a fetus having a heartbeat like that has huge significance that requires no elaboration as to why. Don’t they know that the heart is a muscle that pumps blood? That’s all it is! It’s not the seat of emotion, despite our use of it as a literary metaphor. Every time I see that stupid slogan, “Abortion stops a beating heart” I always think, “So what!?” For Ohio to say that it becomes legally protected once it’s got a functional blood-pumping muscle is completely arbitrary and ridiculous.
This ‘heartbeat’ rule will be especially difficult for abortion advocates to relate to, they being cold heartless assholes and all….
I hope the wording of the laws is as characteristically vague and ill-considered as other right-wing lunatic measures like the one that accidentally outlawed all marriage in Texas. That way we can all point and laugh when Ohio bans killing any animal with a heart.

Or is, say, the surgeon who removes the heart from a brain-dead donor now going to be prosecuted for murder?

The heartbeat bill is probably not going to stand because it’s just completely against the “trimester” language in Roe. I’d be surprised to see it make it past the 6th Circuit actually.

@9 Cause it makes an awesome sound bite. But practically, a heart is one of the first things that develops in an embryo, so it’ll keep you from getting an abortion before some of these girls know they’re pregnant. This is a sad day for choice.
