THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN SEATTLE HAS ISSUED A WINTER STORM WARNING…WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM 4 PM SATURDAY TO 4 PM PST SUNDAY. THE WINTER STORM WATCH IS NO LONGER IN EFFECT.

A MAJOR WINTER STORM IS ON TAP THIS WEEKEND. HEAVY SNOW IS EXPECTED TO DEVELOP ALONG THE COAST ON SATURDAY AFTERNOON AND THEN SPREAD INTO THE INTERIOR OF WESTERN WASHINGTON EARLY SATURDAY EVENING…

ALONG THE I-5 CORRIDOR NORTH OF TACOMA…INCLUDING SEATTLE AND EVERETT…STORM-TOTAL SNOWFALL OF 4 TO 8 INCHES IS EXPECTED. WESTERN SKAGIT AND WHATCOM COUNTIES SHOULD RECEIVE ABOUT 3 TO 5 INCHES OF SNOW. IN GENERAL…LIGHTER AMOUNTS WILL OCCUR NEAR THE CASCADE FOOTHILLS WITH HEAVIER AMOUNTS FURTHER WEST ALONG THE SHORES OF PUGET SOUND. SOME PARTS OF EASTERN KING COUNTY…WHERE WIND IS A BIG THREAT…WILL RECEIVE 1 INCH OR LESS OF SNOWFALL.

(To those of you offended by the ugly all-caps text, I say suck it! NWS style demands all forecasts and warnings shall be screamed. As a nerdy little kid—oh hell, now—I live for any and all weather warnings, and thus have a warm place in my heart for messages written as such.)

  1. I have a half gallon of sapphire, 3 bottles of tonic and netflix on my 360.

    If that is not enough I have 30 vicodins left over from surgery.

  2. I am jetting off to Chicago tomorrow at 12:35. (First Class, of course), doing my Christmas shopping, then proceeding to Omaha by rail. But you kids have fun. No loud parties, and don’t let the pipes freeze.

    If your power goes out, don’t call me.

  3. Already filled my car with B20 instead of the fuel line clogging B99 so I can pick up my friends from the airport on Monday.

    My (unchanged) plan is to celebrate the Winter Solstice by feast, fire and frolick.

    Also, as an ex-submariner I associate all caps with the orders that would come in to the boat by teleprinter: PROCEED TO X/Y LAT/LON AND DRIVE IN CIRCLES

  4. My plan is to not leave the apartment. I’ve been meaning to clean for near on 2 weeks now, so I might as well, but if I find a way to put it off again I’ll be playing Age of Empires and cooking some of the groceries I thought to buy during my snow day yesterday.

  8. I’ve got all I need to get me through a weekend snowed-in in my crib:

    1) two full 18-packs of Pabst Blue Ribbon

    2) 25 pounds of oatmeal-raisin cookies (my favorite!)

    3) the entire Godfather trilogy on DVD. With extras, ’cause I got the box set, bitches! Have fun getting down Denny Way to get to the SIFF Cinema, Paul Constant!

  12. Split pea soup (with homemade stock) is simmering, pineapple muffins (with a slug of Malibu) are done, next is some gingerbread.

    I had planned for this to be one of those years I never got around to decorating but I’m having a rethink on that.

  13. I went to Joe’s (nee G.I. Joe’s) and bought two more pair of long johns. That was after the recent purchase of Navaro “Glacier Shoes” for $30 at the tent sale.

  16. I walked to the grocery store and loaded up on flour and am planning on baking all the cookies I swore I wasn’t going to bake this year. Unless the power goes out due to BIG SCARY WIND. In which case, I’ll pile on the blankets and work my way through a big ass pile of books.

  18. @5, that windchill really doesn’t enter into my plan of taxicabs, department stores and the route between my room at The Drake and their cocktail lounges.

    I may be a cheapskate in all other aspects of my life, but I like to travel in style. Besides, when one is going to Omaha, one has to pamper oneself a bit.

    Is the Winter Storm Warning in effect or not? Is there a differenve between a storm warning or a storm watch?

    FWIW, old-style AP/UPI/Reuters news flashes used to come into radio stations via thatsame all-caps teleprinter format. Takes me back…

    And those of you with plans for things using ELECTRICITY, better get your shit done now, ’cause when the power goes OUT – as it will in many, many places buffeted by 70 mph wind gusts – all that cookie baking and 360 playing is going to come to a grinding, screeching HALT.

    My advice: Dress warm, stock up on bottled water, canned goods, ribeye steaks (or at least brats), beer, whisky, Presto Logs, and BBQ charcoal…

  25. You don’t need to cancel your cookie baking if you have a gas stove – back during the the Hanukkah storm, I made dozen of cookies and kept the kitchen nice and toasty.

    Despite what Mary Norris says, there’s nothing like a good old-fashioned gas stove.

  27. Nerdy are you? Of course you know that the all-caps weather bulletins are legacy from the days when RTTY teletype machines used to spit them out in news rooms and weather stations all over the country. RTTY was a five bit format because in those shortwave radio days bandwidth wasn’t measured in gigabytes. With five bits you didn’t have room for both upper and lower case.

    For all I know there are still NOAA RTTY broadcast stations out there, dutifully sending out weather bulletins. I got my first computer, a Commodore C64 so I could decode the RTTY broadcasts I heard on the shortwave. It was fun. But hitting the NOAA weather web site these days is much more rewarding. Even with ASCII graphics I doubt you’d ever get moving weather radar images off an impact printer. Although I’m sure someone much nerdier then anyone I care to know probably did try it at some point…

  31. Make chocolate cheesecake, hang out with friends, dink around on the internet, listen to traffic reports on KUOW, and feel smug about living totally off the grid.

  34. Stocked up on groceries and movies yesterday, and we have two gallons of vodka in the liquor cabinet. Tomorrow I will venture out by foot to my favorite pan-Asian takeout to get dinner. They are always open, no matter what. My work will probably be closed again on Monday. Fuckin’ bring it on.

  36. Solar panels, which charge big batteries. Except that during this time of year we also run a generator for about an hour a day. And the only electricity we use in the house is the laptop and several small 12-volt lights.

    Okay, now I’m jealous!

    A gas range (preferably a Wolf 48″ with charbroiler and griddle) is on my “must have” list; if I’m ever wealthy enough to buy a house/condo, that is.

  38. movies, winter music, too much food and leftover birthday cupcakes, and Internet and weather reports and SLOG. And maybe a walk in the snow…but I’m still thinking about it. 🙂
