Japan had invested billions in building its nuclear power industry, but now, of its 54 nuclear power plants, only 17 remain in operation.

No prospect has emerged for the resumption of operations of suspended nuclear reactors in Japan even after their regular checks come to an end.

There are 54 reactors in Japan. 35 have suspended operations due to aftereffects of the March 11th earthquake, regular check-ups or government requests.

That’s a bit worrisome as Japan heads into the peak summer demand months with hundreds already hospitalized due to heatstroke.

Meanwhile, the latest unprecedented natural disaster to threaten the crippled Fukushima Daiichi facility? Rain. Nope, no way the plant’s designers could have possibly anticipated that.
