Joel Connelly disapproves of my potty mouth. Which is his right. But Joel—so very prim in print, so very profane in person—put something between quotation marks that I didn’t say or write. Which is a journalistic no-no, no?

With his gift for analysis, and tolerance of opposing viewpoints, Dan Savage of The Stranger on Tuesday ridiculed those who complain that all those lights “may add a few minutes to some people’s commutes.”

“Tough (bleep)!” opined our potty-mouthed pundit.

No self-respecting potty-mouthed pundit uses exclamation points every time he uses a naughty word. Doing so would indicate a certain childishness about profanity, or an unfamiliarity with it. It screams, “I only use words like ‘shit’ when I’m really, really, really upset! Shit!” Those of us who use profanity casually and habitually, in print and in conversation, use exclamation points only when additional emphasis is called for. Here’s what I actually wrote…

Yes, pulling down the Alaskan Way Viaduct—which no one would propose building today if we hadn’t been dumb enough to build it then—and replacing it with a boulevard that reconnects the city to its waterfront may add a few minutes to some peoples’ commutes. Tough shit. Cities are crowded places, and it usually takes a little time to get from one end of a city to another.

No exclamation point, Joel. Just a calm, cool, measured period. You misquoted me. Or mispunctuated me. I demand a correction.

  1. Feeling your pain, Dan. I got a brilliant and sophisticated bit of punctuation ruined by a dull and sophistic copy editor at the Spokesman Review once when I wrote a letter to the editor. My demand for a retraction and immediate execution of the editor was met with derision.

  2. I think the real problem for the papers these days is that they’re feeling the heat about not using profanity but bleeps. And it’s an argument for using more fucks and shits in your paper. Fuck ’em.

  3. He also rearranged the ‘ in people’s or is it peoples’ Clearly his punctuation problems are not limited to those that involve profanity. Which reminds me a high school english teacher who went to great lengths to correct a student who said “son of bitches” when he should have said “sons of bitches.” Of course if they were brothers it should have been “sons of a bitch” but now we are just splitting hairs aren’t we?

  4. Well, Dan fucked the shit out of girlfriends when he was in college … quote …

Course, we could have guessed as much, from Chicago and all …

Potty mouthed only begins to tell the tale of the Stranger and classic boy/teen/ fuck the world crap ..

It does sell, thought, give that some priority …
